..from an 'old' friend!

I'm very, very happy for you, Melanie. Here's hoping this sort of work comes to fruition for one who's talent really does deserve a wider audience.

BTW, I thought the image of Kerry was stunning...the best of the bunch!

Thanks Mr.J!

If you're bored, check out the link to the gallery. There are more of him there, some ISO 3200... worth taking a peek at.

I'm a believer in ETTL2, so this is good to know.

What lens did you shoot most of your flash pics with? I mean, what focal length... because in case you didn't know this trick already, and provided the 550 acts like the 420, you can avoid over-lighting the foreground (the crowd here) by making the flashhead zoom temporarily (not via the manual zoom of the 550EX, that is) and on my 420EX it's done by pushing the tilt lock at the back of the flash. When I do so, the head zooms at 105mm as long as I press the lock button. You get a "spotlight" effect, throwing no light on the edges...

could you try it on the 550 and tell me? how cool, if it works... but of course if all your Kerry pics were done past 105mm, no regrets.

I like that one too (well, all of them, really) – and WOW! ISO 800 looks GREAT!

I'll be looking at the rest of them now – thanks for the update and the link.

Great work!

Melanie,

What's with the lady in the red hat? What are those white things?

You did great with your photos. No wonder they asked you back.

These look great and you caught some great emotions there leading up to Kerry's arrival. I'm going to go have a look at the gallery. Well done!

Those are your usual brilliant work. It's sickening.

Yeah, a buncha girlymen! Lol --courtesy of the Governator. I'm part Dem and GOP, so I'm not taking shots.

Question for Melanie:

1. Why was 6 selected for jpegs? Did you post these jpegs as backup to RAW images taken?

2. Could you, at least in the future, specify the lens, not just the focal length (or did I read the EXIF data to quickly).

I liked the black military guy in front of the Kerry banner best --great shot to my eyes.

Yeah, I heard about the girly-men thing. I think it was a case of a little language barrier.

I used either a Canon 100-400 IS or a Canon 70-200 2.8 IS lens for the long shots. The last in the gallery is a 10D photo with a Canon 20mm 2.8

I shot RAW. The jpeg quality is the conversion... and whatever pbase dreamed up for exif data. It isn't 100% accurate.
