For those of you looking for a new purchase or upgrade to a new dcam, what would be your:

1. best time for you to go (within this year)
2. preference model/ class
3. acceptable price range

Hello GoldenHammer:

I have a little different view regarding upgrades. Most consumers never maximize the technology currently available. This is true with computer equipment, software, and even golf. A wise old golf pro once told me that most golfers would be far better off investing in practice and lessons than in golf equipment. Such an investment would dramatically increase their enjoyment of the game.

With that view expressed, I think the best deals are found at the sweet spot. The spot just below the next dramatic jump. Some great deals were floating around on the 505v just after the release of the 707. One could argue that the 505v was more camera than what most digital users would ever need. From what I see ... the digital camera is for immediate results such as sharing a picture on the net, printing a photo mostly 8x10 or smaller, etc.

Buying at the sweet spot also insures that the consumer knows in advance exactly what they are buying. In other words, all the shortfalls, bugs, fixes, etc. all well known.

Just my view.

I think the question is a good one, but the answers are not available at this time. Why? I think Foveon is a wild card that has the potential to turn the industry upside down. We need to see Phil's review of the new Sigma, and then decide if the Foveon technology is worth waiting on. Those of us with the 707 are fortunate enough to have a camera that makes the waiting easier. Otherwise, to answer your questions, I think the best thing to do is figure out what you want, then see what you can afford and then decide when the best time is. I want an SLR form factor. I love the pictures taken with the Cannon D30, and assume the D60 will be even better. The price of a new D60 is fine, but the len and need for 1 gig microdrive push the price too high, altho I could do it. Right now, the D30 on Ebay is still too high. (FUnny, people smart enough to know what it is, don't know it is discontinued and are paying what a new D60 will cost on Ebay!) So, in a few months, maybe there will be great deals on D30's and I may be seriously tempted. Otherwise, if the Foveon proves out, I will wait to see if the Nikons Oly's and Canon's of the world make any moves. Bottom line, I am an unrecovered cameraholic, but I may be able to hold out until at least this time next year. By then, we may be in a whole new ball game.

I love this question.

I recently bought a Sony FD92 and I caught the bug big time so I am already considering stepping up. I am torn between the value of the Fuji finepix4900 and the machismo of the Sony 707. Is there anything in the near future that might bring the 707 down to the 500 to 600 dollar range? or should I pay the $400 now and get the Finepix 4900?

Thanks,
Peter

I would suggest the F707 possibly would hit $600 by this year... :D. I think it is worth for the additional cost to go for a F707 over the 4900.

I like "half step behind" approach, because we are buying a proven tool for taking nice pictures, but not buying "Technology".

It is the photographer takes the picture, not the camera itself... :D

I wonder what would be the price of a 6MP Foveon base dcam, said the D60 is at the price level of $2,000, Canon has counted this in for the short to medium term. So I would probably predict the Foveon system would just get close to this level.

The D30 seems not that impressive and really supeior than F707 except some pro features and len exchange. Yes. probably the Foveon base dcam would be a nice buy this time next year.
