I have just successfully updated the firmware on this camera from 1.0 to 2.1 but that process has now made the camera unusable since the original english language has been totally removed & replaced with a foreign language.

Apparently this camera has a potential range of 35 languages.

I have looked up the local authorized repair centre in my locality & they want $99 (Aus) just too look at the problem. I shudder to think what they would additionally ask to correct the problem, one that for them should be a basic 101 exercise, taking probably less than an hour. I would expect a total rip off.

I've only managed to see one video online of the same problem for this camera. In that case the fix was done by the user himself using a Github Linux approach that looked quite complex.

Are you aware of a specific or general fix in the industry that I could do myself? I would need something that would work with a camera connection to my Win 10 computer.

Thanks for any suggestions.

It’s possible to change the language very easily, using the menu:

Yes it's easy if the language is in english but there are more than a few setting in the relevant menu & they are all in a foreign language. In that case it is virtually impossible to know which is the right one unless you have the patience to blindly try every one of them, and remember also then you have to make a choice from 35 languages listed in a foreign language. Not really on is it!

Hello dalpets,

Why not type the foreign language into google and have it translate for you so you can maneuver thru the menus and change the language into English. May be a little time consuming but possible. You also can determine what the language is and then look for someone who speaks/reads the language to help you. You can also take a photo of the language and post it in this thread and perhaps someone can tell you what the language is.

Best regards

Randy

It might also be possible to do a factory reset, and then on startup, you get to choose the language on the first screen. It might even default to English.

This video shows the steps, which can be copied even if the foreign language menus are unintelligible. Note that changing the language is one of the options before doing the reset:

The installed firmware reset the camera language to spanish and now OP thinks his camera is broken.

I've personally changed the language on phones from arabic and chinese back to english, it's not easy but not difficult either.

(the way OP told the story, the strange and exotic language couldn't be switched back to english and that was the issue, which would require reflashing the correct firmware, dunno who's explanation is the correct one).

Yes, that is also something that could be done.

Good find,

I did not read where he said it was now set to Spanish. I don't believe he said that.

Go to the Setup Menu as shown in the user manual....

No matter what the language is the "A" in the box is always there to allow it to be found.

On my RX100M6 the Language was found at page 5 of 7 of Setup, No idea which page it appears on ZV-1. I set my M6 to some random language and easily found the item with the A in the box within Setup, so back to English, sadly no Australian language. :-)

He neither said the language was Spanish nor claimed the camera is broken.

All fixed, but silly me. I was look all the time in Menu 1 for the answer, whereas the reference you make to the language setup 'A' in menu 4 was where I should have been looking.

I think I had fixed it in my head that because of its nature it should have been in a first menu, rather than the last, so I looked no further until your comment gelled . I'll take more care in future.

Thanks very much for your help.

I think Sony puts the less commonly used menu items towards the end. This is an item most people will never once select from the menu.

Every camera I've met makes it easy to (eventually) find the language menu item, so it's usually just a matter of blindly fumbling in a strange menu until something recognisable pops up. The Setup Menu is always the place to start looking.

If you think that the language "jump" that happened is a constant threat, then make sure to add it to your My Menu, along with any other things that annoy because they are hard to find in the menus.

In my case my own My Menu consists of ...
  • Format ... clean off the card before (re)using it. Pesky to find normally in the menu mess.
  • Recover Image DB ... needed at times to get to see images that may have been added to the card or after doing things to the card in the computer.
  • Date/Time Setup ,,, useful to make it easily accessible when travelling through times zones.
Also lurking in there are Stabilisation and Shutter Selection left over from early days when experimenting and learning the camera. I could delete those two now as I'm happy with what I've set.

Sorry, late to the party.

Have you tried just changing the Language option?
This is a screenshot from my ZV-1 which is Ver 2.01.

Edit: just realised all sorted :-)
