so who made the sensor?

Can you send a link ? It says both these together in one sentence, or just "entirely new" ?

I'd put my money on a heavily reworked Panny 16mp sensor (which wouldn't be half bad).

Rumors has it it is been manufactured in Area 51! :)
Is a motherless sensor and only a DNA test will confirm who the real father is.

Olympus facebook page says an entirely new sensor, not based on the one in the Panasonic cameras.
most likely, Panasonic
just not to a design Panasonic offer to themselves

and I think that has been going on for some time

I think it has to be Panasonic. If you look at the dimensions of the images (see DPreview), they correspond exactly to those of the GH2 - and not the G3/GX1 - although, the Oly sensor clearly is not oversized, so cannot produce ratios other than 4:3 without cropping.

So my guess would be that it is essentially the GH2 sensor without the oversized provision?

I LOVE XTC!!!

Been a family favorite for 20 years now. Even met Andy's "wife" at my local sushi place on night.

And I think that English Settlement is my personal favorite!

Even if it's made by Panasonic, they could simply be the fab and the design could be Olympus. Certainly they are getting more out of whatever is in the E5 than where that sensor started in the corresponding Panasonic. And at least they'll get better WB and colors :)

and, yes, I like that Kodak comment. Makes me wonder what Leica will do as they've had a very long term relationship with Kodak for sensors.

"Hi Linus, The sensor is more similar to the sensor from the PEN P-3 but with an increased refresh rate or readout of the image off of the sensor. Means the black out is virtually non existant and you can shoot at a much faster frame rates"

And they have said elsewhere (was it Terada himself?) - 1.5 stops ISO, 0.3 EV better DR than the pens.. Hmmm that sounds an awful lot like a GX1 sensor :-)

I call it's marketing. They said the same thing about the PEn-3 - new sensor. In the end, it wasn't confirmed it was a Panasonic GF3 12 MP sensor, yet the performance is virtually identical.

So, that's the bottom line anyway- if the performance is virtually the same, whoever makes it is an academic point.

(and I say, it's most likely Panasonic anyway).

Well that is what Oly has been saying for a while, but not enought to be a "New sensor for some here" OTOH if it was the same as in the GH2 it will be a 3 years old sensor for the purist here!
