I purchased this software, 2.0 version only to have 3.0 come out about a month later. There was no hint from them tht they were working on a new release. Well anyway they send out an email that for a limited time they will sell 3.0 for ONLY 1/2 price for those that own 2.0. I emailed them that as I had only owned 2.0 for a month could I get some consideration on the price... well as you have probably guessed it the reply was no. I'll not give them another nickel and have started using the beta of Lightroom. Frankly its just a matter of learning the program and while I'm sure when Lightroom is released it won't be cheap I'll spend the extra $ with Adobe.
Thats all folks!

Don't blame you. They certainly should upgrade you for free; it's hard to understand why they wouldn't. I was thinking about trying them, but I guess not now.

Good luck,

It's been pretty well known amongst Silkypix users that they've been working on 3.0 for a while. Then they put out a 3.0 beta for everyone to try. Obviously, if you didn't know 3.0 was coming, there really isn't much anyone can do about it. They are, after all, a for-profit software company, and they are offering the upgrade to existing users for half the price (and only for a limited time), which sounds pretty fair to me. I'm a 2.0 user, and after trying the 3.0 free beta, I decided I liked the layout and look of 2.0 better so I have no intention of upgrading. Maybe I'll wait for 4.0. But you can't blame them for charging for a software that they specifically designed as a source of income.

I guess I agree with you in part, I'll never begrudge someone profit for their product but in no way is this program worth $210 in a 30 day period. I felt then and still do that some consideration should have been done for such a short time frame or for that matter offer me a refund. I'll probably pay twice the amount for Lightroom and frankly its not the money its the principle. Its no skin off my nose or theirs for that matter, they have my $140.00 and my poor endorsement and I have the program, live and learn.

When someone says "It's not the money, it's the principle", it's almost always about the money.

Not always, but yeah.

I have bought software in the past and with a month or two they made a new version. The company offered people with the older version a discount on the new version, usually the price is the difference in price between the two versions, and typically thats not half the cost of the program.

While a company maybe in the business for profit, taking care of its existing base should be a priority, which is why they discount the newer version to older customers to begin with. What has happened here maybe within the right of the software company to just shrug it off, but its bad Public Relations. Here you have a guy saying hey I bought your product, I didnt realise there was a new version coming out, and now I want to exchange it up for the newer one. Since the transaction was only a month old and not some customer thats been using it for months on end, I think they should have said hey... thanks for being a customer lets work something out.

Just my opinion...

Greg, well said. I retired from retail 5 years ago and our business philosophy was and is the golden rule... take care of the customer. The company is over 100years in business, listed on the NYSE. Was I surprised by the response I received, not really, a foreign country doing business in the US may not have to give the level of service a domestic company does... but in 100 years think these guys will be around?

Sorry , I have all the software I need on 4 computers.

But seriously, if the software was worth 140 a little while ago then it should still be worth 100. Put it on Ebay or http://www fredmiranda com

If you look at ver3 you may decide you like your version better. Sometimes the difference between versions is cosmetic and really not worth the upgrade. ( I know how you feel about software... I purchased Acad many years ago and then they brought out ver12 a month later. I think they wanted an additional 800 dollars. I think I paid 4k for previous version)
I have had many lessons in software purchase.
Soooooo, smile :-)
SO MAKE ME AN OFFER...

Funny how such a small amount of money can frustrate me. I started using Lightroom and think I'll wait for that to come out of beta, the only thing I don't like about it is creating the librarys and thats not a deal buster. I use CS2 and PSP and Lightroom seems to merge well with both of them. I haven't used Silky since this all came up, its a nice program but not the only one. I'll probably just not use it rather than go through the trouble of Ebay. Keep smiling as life goes on...

T3/Peter Phan, and when someone says the 5D is a great camera at an affordable price and says they are going to buy it but does not. What does that mean??

I understand your frustration. However, I don't think Adobe is much different. If I upgraded PSE to the latest version, Adobe would give me a whopping $20 discount. Actually, I can't even get the latest version (5) because they did not release it for the Mac. And to get raw conversion with a lens tab and CA correction in ACR, I would need the full version of Photoshop. Being an amateur, that's a bit too many $$. Lightroom sounds nice, but to try the beta, I would have to upgrade my OS from Mac OS X 10.3.9 to 10.4 for $129.

So I recently paid for SP3. Had tried SP2, liked it, then found out about SP3 coming soon, and waited until they released it. If I had paid for SP2, I don't know if I would pay again for SP3, though.

The clincher for SP3 was when I printed three versions of a nice landscape shot in 8x10: one from SP3, one from PSE/ACR and one from DPP2. My wife and 12 year old daughter both pointed at the SP3 version and insisted that it was the nicest because it had the best color. That was all I needed to hear :)

Charles,

How do you like lightroom. I downloaded yesterday and I really love it so far. I hope it comes at a good price.

Like others I have a lot of sympathy with you. I have had a good look at Silkypix and was contemplating purchase BUT the current version had been out a while and I was in no rush so I wondered when upgrades would occur then I picked up on DPReview that 3 beta was around. IF Silkypix clearly identified 3 beta on their site and/or in routine mailings then your annoyance might be directed at yourself! I didn't pick it up that way - but I'm good at missing such things.

Principles - expensive things to keep! But have as many as you can afford. If Silkypix is the best for you, swallow your pride.....

I use Qimage (a programme mainly for printing) a lot - and its owner, Mike Chaney has a principle - updates are free for life. I've had it 7 years and spent not a penny on updates - except I bought another copy and upgraded to a superior version (that I didn't need) because such service and attitudes deserve support. Of course, it just happens to be a b* good programme too.
