Should I upgrade?

I currently have an X-T2 and am wondering if an upgrade to an X-T4 would be worth it. A local camera shop has several in excellent condition for about $800.

For lenses I have a 18-55 F2.8-4, 16-80 F4, and 55-200. I also have a Fringer Pro II adapter to so that I can use my Canon lenses, mainly my 10-18 and 150-600. My usage is all personal use. Primarily I take photos of landscape, nature, animals, architecture, street, and general travel. No portraits and usually for anything with fast action I use my Canon R7. I also do some video, but nothing major, just clips of events and places I visit.

I’m not sure if an upgrade for my use would be worth it, but I have read the auto focus is a significant improvement and the better battery life would be nice, especially for a trip coming up. I could sell my X-T2 to offset some of the cost, but I kind of want to keep it. I’m not looking at the X-T5. Mainly for the cost, but also because I’m also concerned with the high resolution that images would not look the best with the lenses I have.

Also, a side question. I also have a 15-45 lens. With the other lenses I already have, can anyone think of any reason to keep this one? I do have an X-T1 that I use occasionally, but I have enough lenses to go around. It doesn’t go for much, but if I bought the X-T4 it could offset a little of that.

I appreciate anyone’s thoughts. I may just be suffering GAS and obviously the images from my X-T2 do not magically look worse because newer cameras come out.

I loved my X-T2 and when the shutter release came off [in the camera bag; I baby my stuff, still can't explain it] I got a quote from Fuji to repair it. The $$ was enough to say "don't repair it" and used this as an excuse to by the X-T5. I'm very happy I did, but missed that second body and just recently got a used X-T3. No serious regrets and I'm betting the improved capabilities of the X-T4 will be well received. I did a walk around with the X-T3 and the kit lens that came with the X-T2 [the 18-55 you own] and it's just as good as I remember [I've leaned heavily on the 16-55, which fits perfectly on the X-T5]. I predict the 15-45 will not provide any useful opportunities that differ from what you already have.

For the photos you take? No.

If you want the better battery and IBIS, yes.

Worth it in what way? If I were you, I'd upgrade my glass instead.

The greater resolution will make your lenses look better, not worse - maybe not more detail, but noticeably better looking detail, even if they might not fully exploit the extra potential resolution.

The 15-45 isn't the greatest in the user experience department, but it's capable of very good image quality with any camera, especially at the wide end.

Personally, I really can't stand the X-T4's flip out screen and wouldn't trade my X-T2 for one, especially when the image quality won't be improved at all. IBIS would be nice, but I don't really need it. IMO, the only newer camera that actually improves upon the X-T2 in most respects, and doesn't significantly compromise the classic user interface is the X-T5, that's the one I'd buy.

The sensor is better I think, esp. the T2's tendency to cyan skies. IBIS is worth it.

All your lenses, all lenses, will look better on a higher pixel count sensor. You may not gain much but they will look better.

All those gains will be modest though.

Fuji X-T4 not for everyone; with IBIS and new battery as advantages. Not replacing my Fuji X-T2 due to low resale value; not reflecting its long-term value. Made in Japan Fuji X-T2 more durable with better materials than my cheaper Fuji X-T3 made in China. Alternatively Fuji X-T5 at 1.700 USD / euros; skip Fuji X-T4?

The X-T4 sounds like a sensible option if you think you will benefit from IBIS and improved AF.

I'm not convinced about the battery benefits - simply because if you still have a X-T2 then you end up with two different battery types - so the hassle offsets the batery life with a mixed setup IMO. (However - that said - with the newer NP-W235 battery you get the option of buying third party versions that have inbuilt USB-C charging socket - which offsets that nixed type hassle)

I still keep my 15-45. It's an irritant. It works. I hate the power zoom. But it is tiny and lightweight even compared with the 18-55 - and that means you can just tuck it in the bag with little penalty when travelling. So i keep it for 'just in case' packing.

The important thing when deciding to upgrade is looking at what improvements you will get and are they worth the cost. You have pointed out two improvements:

- Better AF

- Improved battery life

Is this worth the cost?

You also mentioned your lenses on a high MP body and are worried about how the results will look. Your lenses will look as good as they do today. They may not get you the full benefits of the sensor yet that should not hold you back.

I would not bother with the XT4 and would go straight to the XT5, which will do you for some time. The XT5 is more refined than the XT4 with the beautiful 40MP sensor, 3 way tilt screen, better AF and latest fuji color profiles. Your lenses will be better with the 40MP sensor, don’t worry.

I would personally never buy an XT4 because of the flippy screen, and believe that XT2 24MP sensor renders better than the XT4 26MP sensor.

I owned both and the upgrade to the XT5 is worth it.
