Hi everyone, still getting to know what my S1r is capable of so I have spent some time seeing how low a shutter speed I can hand hold.

Coming from Sony full frame, which said it had IBIS, but just seemed to take the day off when I needed it :-)

Then to Micro 4/3 where my G9 and Olympus Em1ii seem to defy gravity. I have high hopes the the dual IBIS of the S1r and 24-105 will be closer to my M4/3 kit than the Sony.

My first test was taking a similar image to one I had taken awhile ago on my Em1ii in the Queen Victoria Building in Sydney.

And now with the S1r.

After taking that image I was in one of the camera stores in the city and picked up a Hoya ND8 filter to have a play around with some slower shutter speeds with my landscape images.

The surf has been good most days I have had off at the moment so hitting the waves for a surf takes priority over photography :-)

Anyway today was cloudy and dull so I took the S1r and the ND down along the local lake to have a play as the strong wind was moving the water around. With a Polariser fitted as well, I found I was able to hand hold down to around one second.

This was the image I had in mind when I left the house.

So lens sharpness was not an issue:-) hand holding over a second not really possible.

Still a shutter speed under one second is my go to for these types of images as it still gives some texture to the water.

So a fun morning with the camera on a dull day, and I found that I can hand hold the S1r/24-105 combo down to half a second or so with a good hit rate. Not quite as good as my M4/3 gear but still gives me lots of creative options when out and about with the S1r.

Cheers and have a great week everyone.

Steve.

Recently purchased an unused S1r and I am a bit surprised that the in-body image stabilisation is no better than the S5 that I have owned for a year now. It is still quite good of course, maybe I just had unjustified high expectations considering the higher specs and price point. And I have tried various stab settings.

They’re probably using the same tech as they came out around the same time,’ although S1R was a year earlier? And more MP means little harder to get critical sharpness I think? Maybe someone could confirm or correct me on that?

A good reminder and demonstration of the possibilities of handheld slow exposure photography.

Now I need to practice. I haven't shot like that for a while.

Thanks mate, yes sensor size has a lot to do with it, as does MP. That's why M4/3 has such great stability.

Cheers.

Thanks John, slower shutter speeds have been something I have played around with for a long time.

On a trip to Europe years ago it was frustration with crowds that lead me to use them instead as lead lines.

A sunny day in a New Zealand forest meant normal images weren't working so I tried this instead.

A bright sunny day down at the same jetty at the start of this thread, found a school of passing fish more attractive than plain blue sky.

No one has ever guest what it is, can you?

So slow shutter speeds are great fun to play around with when other things are not working or a little dull.

Cheers.

I shoot a lot of ICM with 1/8, 1/4 sec or longer on my S1 and S5. I've meant to test whether stabilization is better on or off; it seems that when one is shooting and moving the camera in order to get nice lines, the stabilization might actually cause jagged lines in the image from trying to counteract the intentional movement. Stabilization off might yield nicer lines in the final image. Something I'll test next time I'm doing ICM 🤓🧐

Since you are new to the S1R, the current firmware 2.0 brings welcome new functionality and AF enhancements. Simply recommend that version of the camera to enhance your experience with it.

Sweet images.

What FF Sony body were you using before?

I'm still lurking the Pana L-mount forum as I still consider the S1 series to be the most appealing to me.

Thanks mate, I have wondered if I am causing damage to the I.S system by twisting the camera quickly when making some of these images.

Cheers.

Thanks mate, updated all firmware when I brought the camera, never found any issues with my G9's focusing over five years of ownership. And so far the S1r is easily coping with the images I am asking it to make.

Well done. Photography as art is not appreciated generally as is pixel-perfect - but it has its own genre.
Thanks Tom, great artist stand alone in any field of the arts, if people don't appreciate the work of Ansel Adams, Man Ray, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Philippe Halsman or someone a little younger :-) Maria Svarbova. Because they chose photography as their medium they are missing out on some great works. of art.

Cheers.

I wouldn't be too concerned, I've done the same and no issues:

Thanks mate, an original A7 for my Sony, the S1/S1r body felt perfect to me when I first held one years ago. I never jumped in because my G9 with the P/L 10-25 is fantastic.

When I stumbled over my second hand S1r with a shutter count around 800, for $1300 odd Australian dollars it was too good a deal to pass up. Don't need the 47 mp but its nice to crop with and I can see a difference in the files over my M4/3 kits when it comes to editing.

The S1r will be a landscape/deliberate day out for photography camera for me. I would buy an S1 over the newer S5ii as to my hands the older body style is much preferred.

Cheers.

Very nice mate, the first time I worried about it was when I was moving the camera up and down during the exposure...

I could almost feel the I.S system fighting the movement wondering what's going on :-D

Or this one on a different day when the violent movement has removed all idea that these are yachts at their mornings.

I did stop after a few of these as the camera was getting a good shake.

Ah ok A7 mark I. I still have mine, it's a curious piece of gear I'll say it like that.

S1R is fantastic, I tried it during a photo event. I'm still hoping for Pana to retake the first place and be the first to deliver a 100Mpx FF sensor with S1R mark ii... Who knows hehe.

Tahnks mate, yes the a7 was a good camera with the 35 mm f2.8 Zeiss lens. A nice package size just the Sony colours/white balance always seemed to need a little more help P/P.

Still I hope the next S9 can add a view finder and still keep it small like the a7 was, it would be a sure fire purchase for me.

Cheers.
