I'm using Adobe Camera Raw / ACR to develop DNG files from my Pentax's.

In ACR does anyone know what the Embedded profile actually is?

The ACR profile drop-down menu has these options :

1. Embedded
2. Adobe Standard
3. Bright
4. Landscape
5. Natural
6. Portrait
7. Vibrant

2. is Adobe's take on a profile, rather flat colours (esp greens) and boring tone but can be a good starting point.

3 to 7 are the same profiles as selected in camera, mostly too colourful for my tastes, Natural can be ok though.

Then I select 'Embedded', tones become slightly deepened and colours attain a slight yellow green cast, but I'm really liking the results (after a tweak) more than any of the other profiles. Looks to have kinda 'Hassleblad' colours to me! - subtle colours yet rich, and interesting subtle colours into the shadows and highlights (rather than obvious primary like colours and desaturated shadows and highlights).

Anyway, what is Embedded? - I assume it's a profile contained within the raw file, but it doesn't relate to the in-camera choices of Bright, Landscape, Natural, Portrait, or Vibrant.

It might depend on which camera, but... when you select Embedded it should offer a selection (~6) of embedded Pentax profiles. Scroll down.

If I understand it correctly you can set your camera to sRBG or AdobeRGB. The embedded profile is one of these two. In most cases it is an sRBG profile.

I have used ACR quite a lot in the past, but the colours aren't always realistic. Green slightly tends towards yellow. Some time ago I started using Rawtherapee in combination with Gimp. I used the same DCP file for all my cameras. The colours are better to my taste than Adobe colours.

We may be using different versions of ACR, so mine is 16.2.1 on Windows and on the right hand side the profile drop down - above the Light right selected Camera Landscape for the the picture I opened.

It has

Adobe Color
Adobe Standard
Adobe Vivid
Camera natural
And
Adobe Monochrome

and browse which has

Adobe Raw with Color/ Mono /Landscape/ Natural / Portrait / Standard & Vivid

Camera Matching Bright / landscape / Natural / Portrait and Vibrant

Personally created ones, and artistic B&W Modern & Vintage groups.

But not embedded

Possibly some cameras store the the parameters to get the look of their preview in the Maker note part of the metadata, but the K1 seems not to.

This is what I see, with my Pentax KP, K-1 and 645Z, ...ok so it's not the most recent ACR version.

Please ignore the Huelight, Color Fidelity and RNI profiles - they are separate purchased profiles.

The 'Embedded' profile was always shown along with the Adobe and Landscape / Portrait etc profiles as I mentioned in the OP.

I just tried selecting different picture modes in-camera, Bright, Natural, Landscape, etc, (knowing that these should only be for jpeg processing) to see if they become the 'Embedded' raw profile, they did not. The 'Embedded' profile remained constant no matter which in-camera jpeg picture mode was selected.

I've haven't got a problem with the Embedded' profile, far from it, would just like to understand what it is, as it looks good.
