I just got a coolpix 4500 and ordered the viking 256mb compact flash card from amazon since it was so cheap. Unfortunatley, most of the time the camera gives me a "This Card Cannot Be Used" error message on my LCD. I have a scandisk 128mb and it seems to work fine and I just got a simpletech 256mb card and it seems to work too. Anyone else having problems with the viking card?

I had definite problems with the Viking card with my niece's 885. I wouldn't be surprised if they recurred on other Coolpix models. I would return it.

I have a 256 viking for my 5000 and it works fine. Did you format it in camera?

Ken.

I've used the 265mb Viking card with my CP5K for several months and been very happy with it. I've never encountered a problem.

Have had the Viking 265 from Amazon some months now--in 880 no problems whatever. I love the card.

Yes I did. I didn't seem to fix the problem. After downloading the photos using a card reader and putting the card back in the camera the same message appears. Its hit or miss .... sometimes it recognizes the card and others it does not (usaully fails though). Its strange but the last time I got it to work was by placing the card in a coolpix 2500 and taking a few photos and then putting it back in my coolpix 4500.

i got the card yesterday. after doing a few test shoots, the error showed up randomly. it is also very slow. it took 1 min 27sec to write a raw file which can be done in 21sec with my other card. i am going to exchange it.

my card has the following marking on the edge:
THNCF256MMA (T00AB) JAPAN 0230KK

could that be from a bad batch?

Bought my Viking 258mb cf card about a month ago from Amazon for use with my new 5700. No problems with the card whatsoever (although the number of photos available is less than I calculated--camera indicates that I have 104 photos available when I calculated about 140 based on fine photo size--perhaps my math was in error).

By the way, I love my 5700. Incredible camera. Low light not a problem either.

I've been using the Viking 256 MB card in my 5700 for over a month now without any problems. I use it at home and at work - the card gets swapped between my camera and card reader at least once a day - and its been 100% reliable.

I have had two 256 Viking's for over 7 months now and they work great..fast to. I have used them in the 5000, 5700 and 5000. I would bet that yours is defective. Send it back to Amazon or call Viking and they will replace it.

I have the same markings - THNCF256MMA (T00AB) JAPAN 0230KK - on my Viking 256and my 4500 won't recognize the card. It sits for a while (no start up noises) then comes up with 'This card cannot be used'.

The 4500 will not allow me to format the card (it skips over the choice in the setup menu.

I tried formatting the card in my computer - no go. I tried copying everything from a working card (the Nikon001.DSC file and Nikon100 folder with some photos) - no go.

I am very bummed about this!

I just recently put into service a 256mb Viking w/ my CP5k. Also got the same error. Seems to be related to the charge level of the camera battery. w/ fully charged batter or AC adaptor, problems go away. Problems appear to first show up when battery level is low enough to cause the camera to goe into it's mode where it blanks the monitor display while writing to the card. This issue doesnt show up w/ my 192mb Delkin card.

They didn't seem to know about the unusable errors posted here, but the tech said that he'd heard that this card was slow in the 4500. He said that there was only one chipset, so there's no way to filter out the 'bad' cards.

So even if I exchange my card I may get another unusable one, or maybe a slow one.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to return my card to Amazon and get a Ridata.

Hmm... i returned mine to Viking last week and waiting for the exchange. Maybe I should have returned to Amazon to get my refund.

I've had very little luck in regards to my 4500 and had a long and difficult saga in getting the deal I did on the camera. I'm worn out and just want a working card so I'm returning mine to Amazon and getting another brand.
