I have a problem with FinePix S4000. Each time it is turned on, it goes to firmware update mode, on the screen displayed only 2 possibilities - to run update ("OK" button) or to cancel ("BACK" button). It does not react on any control buttons including on/off switch. I can turn it off only by removing batteries. How can I get it out of this mode? What sequence of operations could lead to this mode?

It would have to be the back button stuck down, have you spilt anything on it or had sticky fingers whilst using it?

Paul.

I agree with Paul. Either the 'Back' button is stuck down or the switching mechanism of the 'Back' button is broken. Seems to be the most probable causes...

You can call Fuji to try to get a repair cost out of them... or ask if covered under warrantee... more than likely, however, the cost of repair would be about the same as buying a new camera. You won't know for sure unless you call them.
