I just got anew iMac. Clean install went great. Everything is running expect scanning. I have an HP 3833. I downloaded the software with the latest drivers and I can print so I know the are communicating.

I get these error messages. I tried HP support but it is a robot.

- The connection to the computer is lost

- The scan application on the computer is currently in use

- An OCR application is not installed on the computer

I don't think it is the first two because it says my computers name on the HP LCD. Not sure how to check the 2nd one.

What is an OCR application and why am I possibly missing it. I did some searching but it was not easy to find an answer.

I don't remember what I did when I got the printer in the first place. Not sure if it directed me to a site to download software. I go it from here.

I just tried the virtual assistant and this was the result. Line 2.

How to scan a document as text to your computer using OCR and HP applications

Note: Some printers do not come with OCR support. Consult your product documentation for details. Also, OCR support is currently only available in the computer software.
  1. Load the original on the scanner bed or in the document feeder, if your printer has one. (Use the markings on the printer to guide you.)
  2. Make sure the full HP software with OCR support is installed on your computer.
You can download the full software package from hp.com/support.
  3. Search your computer for HP Scan (Windows) or HP Easy Scan (macOS) and open it.
  4. If there are multiple printers on your network, make sure that the printer shown at the top of the screen or in the Scanner drop-down menu is the correct printer.
  5. If the OCR software is installed and available for your printer, scan the document:
    • HP Scan: Select the Save as Editable Text (OCR) preset, and then click Scan.
Tip: The file is saved in the location specified in the Send To drop-down list in the Destination box. In older versions of the software, click Advanced Settings or More to find the Destination tab.
    • HP Easy Scan: Click Scan. When complete, click Send and select either RTF or TXT on the Format menu. Click Where to designate a folder for the file, and then click Save.

I decided to allow error messages when I re- installed the software.

What is an OCR application
In case you still care about this question, now that your scanner is working:

Optical Character Recognition. When you scan a document, the computer sees text on the page as being just part of a bitmap photo. An OCR application looks for things that look like text and turns them back into text.

This is useful if you are scanning documents that you may need to edit, search, or print out at high quality.

Also if you are the IRS and you want to get all of the numbers off those Form 1040s into your computers with a minimum of manual labor and data entry error.

Thanks for the info. Very helpful.

Just as an experiment you can install the latest version of Vuescan to see if will allow scanning with the HP printer. There are 2100 scanners supported for the Mac OS. You can test the software in demo mode and then decide if it is worth purchasing a license.

My Brother flatbed and Fujitsu scanners are still working under High Sierra. OCR still works but I never use it. Instead I convert to searchable PDFs and import into DEVONthink. I'll be testing Mojave soon; I don't plan on upgrading to Catalina any time soon.
