I hope you enjoy these pix from a recent visit to Italy. I will post some others next week from Herculaneum and Capri.

I would welcome your comments.

One of the many bodies that perished.

Giuseppe Fiorelli (archaeologist) discoved voids in the ash from the victims and filled them with plaster creating sculptuters of the dead.

A house of possible a Senator or merchant.

Inside one the houses.

Roads also used as drains.

Apart from serving as drains they were also used for deliveries of goods carried by horse and cart. The large stones were used for crossing the drains so pedestrians didn't step in the sewage.

Water feature.

A hole in the centre of the roof allowed the rain to drop into the square below (pictured) and was used throughout the house.

Directions to whorehouse.

One of the many beds in the whorehouse.

Erotic painting.

Outer walls of Amphitheatre.

Section of the Amphitheatre.

Smaller theatre.

Part of the wash house.

Section of ceiling - wash house.

Plaster cherub.

Painting.

Painting of Priapus.

and finally one of the many statues.

Nice set of pictures Barr1e. It's pretty tough going on those hot and dusty volcano paths, and on Pompeii's streets, at this time of year!

Sure did! See http://www.warwingsart.com/12thAirForce/Vesuvius.html

Hey Mister - can we have our B25s back please ?

Seriously though, well done for making it up there!

The weather may be a bit different now from what they had in those times but - mainly outside the summer months - Naples often has days with 2 inches/50mm of rain, usually in a concerted downfall, so drainage really matters, and those stepping stones would have been essential !

Did you read Robert Harris' book Pompeii while you were there?

Hi JD (Gareb) -

Thanks - you need a few days to cover the site - it's pretty large.

Hi - the S9000/9500 performed well on that trip. Even the E900 came up to expectations. Great value for money if you can find one.

Isola Verde -

Thanks and hi - I understand the weather this week is in the mid thirties.

We loved our trip (well it is Italy) but I especially enjoyed the tour of Pompeii - all too short. It is fascinating, mind blowing and so educational of times past.

Thanks for the link - I was wondering what the eruption might have looked like.

Regards Barr1e.

Hi Buckshot -

Thanks for your comments. I'm pleased you enjoyed the tour.

If you haven't visited that part of the world then I think it should go on your wish list. Apart from the history the area has - the coastal routes are just stunning.

Kind regards Barr1e.

Barrie, thanks for sharing the photos. We were in Pompeii in early April this year and your pictures took us right back there. It is indeed a neat place to tour. We also spent 2 days on Capri and that was very special too. On the way to Pompeii we came down the Amalfi Coast Road from Rome (what a scenic drive that is) and stayed overnight in Positano in a hotel overlooking the town. Here is a picture from our hotel room balcony (three picture pano, click to expand).

We were in Italy for 3 weeks and saw quite a bit from Florence and Assisi to Napels and Capri. Like you, I recommend that area for traveling. Take care.

I'm a lot more like I am now than I used to be!

I'm happy to see on this forum images of the places where I live, and I have to say that you did on great job on Pompei whit your wonderful photos.

As I already wrote you in a previous thread, I live in Naples and, for the location of my job, every morning I drive on the Highway passing for Pompei.
I hope that you have enjoyed the places and the people too.
Regards
Gianluca

wonderful photos Barrie of a most a most amazing place..thanks for sharing the trip!

Most people seem quite normal; until you get to know them. :)

MNPhoto - hi.

Thanks for the picture of a great view. Our coach couldn't stop on our Amalfi coastal tour as they were filming a pizza advertisement in the coach stopping area. Most annoying as Positano must be a photgraphers' dream.

silvestrog -

Nice to see you again. I was most surprised how huge (large) Naples is. We very much enjoyed the trip and plan to return to cover the area more slowly.

KimberlyC -

Like you I think pictures should be shared - I wish however, we had travelled as extensively as you. The memories.

Thanks all for your kindness in commenting.

Kind regards Barr1e.

You know, if I tried really hard, I could probably come up with a suggestion of where you might stay, pleasantly near enough to Naples yet rather more relaxing!

Hi again -

I was just doing a tour of google (pompeii pix) and was most surprised to see the link back here to dpreview.

Thanks for your comments which we will keep in mind.

Kind regards Barr1e.

Great shots - I've always been facinated with the place (and the whore house directions were interesting to say the least). LOL

Barrie,

I am not in sympathy with the other persons thanks for your photos.

I don't wish to discourage you from learning to take good photos nor actively offend you. However I don't think it is appropriate to post a load of ordinary tourist pics to a camera/photo web site. What particularly motivates me to write this is that not only are your pics taken with a seeming absence of any photographic skill or knowledge of composition, but some are actually blurred!!! In consideration of where you have posted them that really is bordering on crazy.

And it does a disservice to the Fuji, as it is an anti-showcase. In so far as purpose and usefulness is concerned there is no justification, in this instance, in violating this quite sensible T&C :

"Posting many pictures - Do not post many pictures in one message, instead post a link to a gallery. Posting several messages with just one image in each in a short period will be treated as SPAM - it will be deleted."

Ask yourself: did you primarily intend your pics to encourage constructive discussion? That question is pertinant because this is a forum and not a gallery? I suppose one could criticise for poor photography, but I'm not sure that that is constructive, and all that can ultimately be said is "get a book or go on a course", which is hardly a discussion.

And a message to the other persons who thanked the shooter: you are encouraging the dilution of a valuable resource.

lorriman -

We all have views and thanks for yours.

When time is limited we do our best with it. I wasn't posting a gallery, I was showing the historic value of the sites.

Again thanks.

GregHenry and jtbng - noted, and thanks also.

Barrie,

Thank you for your pics, it made my day... or shall i say night.

I don't agree that posting pics should be limited to only a few and to only 'perfectly' taken pics. You can learn a lot from looking at imperfect pictures.

Speaking from experience of shooting in a cave, it's not easy to get upblurred pics.

Looking at the blurred ones will warn others of the difficulty in taking pics as such.

Most importantly, me and a handful of others have a chance to see Pompeii pics personally delivered by Barrie.

What's that I see - is it a bird (etc, etc, etc) - no, it's a flaming troll!

Thanks for one of the most helpful lectures I've read from a Poster whose profile shows they're making their third-ever post here.

If Barr1e is to be berated, let's be say what DOES need to be said: please don't embed pictures in the opening post of the thread - it makes any subsequent revisits a real pain, especially if Smugmug isn't working!

That aside, for many users it's threads like (the majority of) this one that act as the glue that binds the site together, letting them see familar and new sights through other peoples' eyes, and through their chosen cameras, and allowing them the opportunity to discuss and comment on what they've seen.

And some of us like it that way.

"I wasn't posting a gallery, I was showing the historic value of the sites. "

It may not be your primary intent but the result is a gallery of photos of sites of historic value. And in that case here are some places to post your pictures with people who actively want you to :

http://www.flickr.com/search/groups/?w=all&q=historic&m=names

In the meantime this 'discussion forum' is titled 'FujiFilm talk', not 'Historic sites taken with a fuji camera - gallery'. And I don't see why you should be short of time: the photos aren't exactly time sensitive, and it takes just a minute to sign-up to gallery websites. you could be accused of laziness.

Here is another excerpt form this site's T&Cs :

"My latest picture" / gallery / multiple images - Unless it's discussion of a specific technique or setup please do not post "here's my latest picture / gallery" type posts in the camera specific forums, instead please use the Samples & Galleries forum."
