hi guys,

first post for me and its a pleasure to be part of this forum. :)

planning to buy a recording camera....

does anybody knows if the g7 lumix can show what im recording on a external device? Like monitor , tv or smart phone

the manual is really confusing for me....

im just looking for a camera that allows me to “monitor” what im recording , since ill put my camera on top hanging from th ceiling and even if i can rotate the camera own lcd, it is too far to see if it is centered or at appropriate focus

hope ive been enough clear, if the g7 cant do this, please suggest me another camera in the same price ballpark

thanx and happy shooting

The Panasonic G7 will show the HDMI out signal when it is not in "record". As soon as you press record the sceen will go black. The Panasonic G85 will show the signal during record but it is a little more money than the G7.

Thanx tinroof,

so you own the g85?

im looking also for camera that has more than 30 minute of recording (automatic shutdown)

happy shooting

Hi

TinRoof is exactly correct.

You might want to get a DC coupler. This model will work for both the G7 and G85. The key I learned was that it allows the cord to exit on the side as well as on the end to accommodate either camera.

The Panasonic Image App allows you to view on a phone or tablet (on Android, at least), and you can control most settings through it (resolution, aperture, shutter etc). It's very useful for what you are looking for and for remotely firing the shutter.

Smart phone. Pretty much every Lumix camera since the G6 can be controlled and monitored using a smartphone or tablet.

While comments about the limited HDMI functionality are correct, there are advantages to using a wireless remote connection, especially as you cannot use an HDMI solution to control the camera.

Thanx a lot guys,

so does the wireless connection, opposite to the hdmi , show what im recording?

Yes. It gives you a live view of what the camera is seeing.

I'm reading through all the answers, but have a few thought. Yes, you can remotely control the camera through the Lumix app - conditionally. The connection can get flaky as the distance increases since it's a WiFi Direct connection. This may or may not matter: you can't zoom unless you have a lens with power zoom.

Powering the camera is more of an issue than recording time. I don't have a G7 so I can't say how it would bleed off heat.

Side thought about the Lumix app: I do wish they'd redesign it a bit. The "look" is very dated, there's too much wasted space. It would be great if there was a full screen view. As it is half the screen is viewing, the rest is big "buttons" on dead space. It's good as a remote shutter release, not so good for a pro-level control.

You may be getting near a tipping point where a dedicated video camera is a better idea. Much as I like a still camera that can shoot video - it's a compromise in so many ways. A dedicated video camera has a bigger battery, better heat management, audio in/out, AC power built in, etc. Many can be remote controlled and monitored.

Thanx thinkin,

i was trying to avoid videocameras because of the size of them to be hanged on top of my workbench...

So monitoring in real time what im recording is a must!

i have to post my recording on youtube channel. And with the conpression applied by youtube , maybe the 4k isnt strictly necessary

so, is there any camera with full hd at least with live recording monitoring to be connected to some kind of device?

with no recording time limit?

could you explain me more about your powering issues about my needs

thanx for tour time and happy shooting

As members' advice, by wifi connection the free Image App allows we to see the same view as we can see in the evf/LCD and control the camera as on the body through smartphone/tablet.

BTW, if you use the pair of PZ zooms (the 14-42 PZ and 45-175 PZ), we can even control the zoom remotely.

Thanx alcelc,

so youre saying that while recording you can have the libe monitoring on the lobile device?

Consider action cameras then. Some are available without super wide fisheye lenses, and most these days are able to be remote controlled and monitored while recording.

Fewer options and not having to worry about focus generally may make these suitable for your application if your lighting is good.

For the price of a G7 and lens you could buy several action cameras and that gives you the option to make your videos more watchable.

Have you got any examples of what you've done so far?

Yes, it is actually an extension of the key/button set as well as evf/LCD of your camera on a smartphone/tablet.

When we can watch what we are shooting (live view) on camera, we can do the same on the smartphone/tablet through Image Apps and wifi connection. We can even touch smartphone/tablet screen to have nearly full control over the camera including select focus, exposure point etc... If you use the PZ zooms, even the zoom in/out...

But have to make sure there would be no strong wifi signal around otherwise the effective connection range would be shortened or even be disturbed.

Wow, there are some pretty high production values there, this is not your average YT vlogger - in fact that looks like an entire studio complete with lighting and possibly a crew, or at least an assistant.

You won't get anything like Tasty from an action cam, but you will get something that is so easy to use, that you can concentrate on the really important stuff and get up to speed with storytelling.

Start with something like the Yi 4K , but be aware they also make a range of similar cameras (Lite, 4K+).

Yes, you have pretty good control over everything except focus and field of view, and there are ways around that.

It is all a matter of figuring out what is important to you at this stage, and where you want to go in future. For example, while action cams simplify a lot of stuff, you are restricted with focal length; but then action cams are very easily powered from a USB connection as well as being able to be remote controlled.

The G7 will do what you want as well though - I have both and use them alongside each other for my videos.
