I've always been happy with LR/PS for processing but I was having some issue so I thought I'd download OM Workspace (heck, it's free). Shocked to learn that it defaults to using the camera (connected via USB-C) to do RAW processing. Never heard of such a thing. Using my iMac has proven to be incredibly slow (can't image the camera would be any faster but it certainly can't be any slower) so not sure of the value of the SW. The only value I've found so far is that it shows the focus point (kinda...my test shots of birds in flight showed some of the focus points off the bird which can't be because it was mostly in focus (too far away and too small to accurately judge).

Curious, what do folks here use Workspace for, if at all? F/W updates? Saving settings settings?

I import images via card reader using Workspace, since getting cameras not recognized by my LR version. (Plus DNG conversion for a backup image set and possible editing in LR or PS.)

Do my first edit pass and sometimes apply processing to the entire set at once. Earlier versions were too slow, but now it's plenty fast for my needs.

The focus point tool can be helpful and the AI noise reduction is powerful.

Cheers,

Rick

Not sure what this means? Early on Adobe does not recognize new cameras but LR has apparently been updated and sees my OM-1.2 just fine

Do the files remain in their RAW (ORF) state after editing or do you export them to another format for LR?

I downloaded then updated to the latest version and there's no way I can do any editing in Workspace...it's just toooo sloooow. If AI noise correction is that good then maybe I can that run, but I have Topaz DeNoise AI and it's pretty good (also not that fast)

I don't even have LR for quite a few years ever since Abode went subscription base. I have been using Workspace ever since for RAW converting or post processing.

You will need a very decent computer with lot of horsepower and a fairly new NVidia powered graphics card with at least 4GB. AMD graphic card might not work despite of what the spec said. Otherwise AI noise reduction will be greyed out and will not work without graphics card.

I have not tried the RAW processing through the camera method but interested to try.

I have LR6, which does not recognize E-M1iii or OM-1 files.

The Workspace files remain in ORF and edits are non-destructive. All edits can be reset.

I have DxO for higher-level noise reduction but the WS AI is surprisingly good. I had to get a new PC with compliant graphics card to run the AI NR, and that also explains why my WS import and editing time lags have greatly diminished. Very poky on my old PC.

It wasn't grayed out on my machine and the "working" spinny thing spun very briefly but I'm not sure I'm seeing any difference.

I guess my question is, if the AI Noise is that good I'd like to do it here and then finish up in LR (because everything else is wonky and too slow). How do I get the noise reduction into the ORF file and will it show up that way in another editor (e.g. LRc).

Thanks

I mostly use it for HR images. No other SW gets as much detail from HR ORF files as Workspace. For normal resolution files I use DxO.

Focus points in LRc….try

Same with me. The AI Noise Reduction icon is highlighted but I couldn't work out how to activate it. Perhaps it was active already. I don't know.

An iMac could mean just about anything, they've been around for decades! That said OMW is indeed not the fastest processing app around for sure. Result vary depending on the images. It doesn't render the most detailed images compared to some, but has the best anti aliasing I've seen for OVFs and best lens corrections (didn't compare to DxO). Not particularly great at recovering highlights however. That said, with my 8mm I never have to remove CA in OMW but often do with other apps. Generally I default to ACDSee (most details of any apps I've used) but if I run into an issues, I go back to OMW. It's interface isn't all that user friendly but in some situations it works best. Would I live with just OMW? No, but in some situations it's the best solution and it's free.

At the moment I'm using it for stacking. To get a stacked raw, one needs to focus bracket in raw, then composite in WS. You have to remember to check the box for allowing the subject to move. This should be the default. How could you possibly to a HH stack without it? Anyway, after compositing, I export as a TIFF back to the card. The file automatically labeled as being stacked. The card is then imported into LrC for all further editing.

It's a shame exports can be only jpeg or huge TIFFs. DNG would be nice.
I'd probably do similar with HR images.
In other respects, WS is woeful compared to LrC but hey, IT'S FREE.

I'd love to see someone write a LrC <-> OMWS plugin.

For an occasional photographer happy with jpegs and minimal editing, OMWS would be great.

I often use DXO PL7 for my RAW files since Deep Prime only works with RAW files.

However, for files with low ISO, I find I like the WS RAW conversion far better than other software. Also WS does a far better job with the High Resolution files than anything else I have tried.

If you ignore the default to camera processing, then you can just download the files and process them with your PC (which is what I do). It is not slow with my computer, but my computer is very fast.

It uses the camera settings for the conversion of the RAW files, but you can change almost all of these in WS. When I want to use LR or Photoshop, I export the 16 bit tiff file (the Exif-tiff) from WS.

The focus point is where the camera last focused (location of target on the EVF). Unless you have the camera on a tripod, that may not be where the target was during exposure, following the focus. With faster moving targets there is likely to be a larger difference between the focus point location and the target in exposure.

Of course, the focus point location means little in SAF mode if there is any camera movement following focus.

Changing the image settings after the fact and then exporting with Olympus colors which I prefer to Lightroom's output.

I hate editing and try to do as little as I can, so I'm satisfied with (and in fact prefer) basic crop / exposure / shadows / highlights / color profile / gradation options.

I use OM Workspace for digital asset management and for most of my post processing needs. Contrary to you I enjoy the fairly fast startup and the quick computations. I haven't used the AI noise reduction because the Pen-F is not supported.
