I have used Nikon software to download and view my images for a long long time. It has often been buggy. Now I have reached my limit with it. Went on a six week trip and had over 5000 images of birds on a CF express 512 g card. went to D/L using said software and had lots of trouble, it just kept hanging and I had to do the old CTR alt Delete trick to get out of it. Rebooted and it still kept happening. I shoot with a Z8 and 600 pf 6.3 or a Z62 with other Nikon lens, allway in RAW. My computer is up to date with 32 gig ram and a fast card, built for me 18 month ago.

I have had it with NX Studio as I now find it has lost about 200 images from the card, they are just black frames and naturally I formatted my card after download. I know I can recover if required. What I would like to know is what do others use to view and download images and make fist pass selections before importing into Lightroom Classic for processing?

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Do you use Nikon Transfer 2 (part of the NX Studio download) for transferring you image files from the memory card to your computer? I use a separate card reader. Have never had any problems with it. I do not use NX Studio for editing.

Try Photo Mechanic . It will copy the images to the computer to folders you designate and file names you want. Once there, you can QUICKLY go through the images to select the ones you want and delete the other, greatly reducing import times into Lightroom Classic.

It's a fantastic time saver. Runs on Mac or Win.

Thank you both for your replies.

Yes I do use the Nikon Transfer app and it is buggy on my computer. I don't edit my files in the Nikon software I just use it to make my selections on the files I want to process in Lightroom and then Photoshop.

The Photo Mechanic looks interesting, I will give the trial ago and see how it is.

You don't need it to copy files.

I like to use Faststone Image Viewer to import and cull. It's fast, simple to use and free (I donate to the developer occasionally).

Have you ruled out possible issues with your card reader, USB cable or USB socket (especially if you are plugging into a USB socket on the front of your computer)? I would test with the USB cable that came with the camera plugged into a USB socket on the back of your computer.

Are you upto date with Transfer? They fixed the large file slowdown last year IIRC.

I haven't seen it in awhile.

When you say the files are black do you mean on the card or on the computer?

I removed the software and downloaded and reinstalled the newest version, it made no difference unfortunately.

Re the black frames it was only on the computer but I had formatted the card after my D/L. The frames were fine on the camera.
