I'm not going to lie, I'm disappointed with Nikon at the moment. I ordered a 400 4.5 S back in July and hoped to have it in time for a recent work trip (NPS). That didn't happen but no big deal, I made it work with other options. And I understand the current state of the world, so I'm patient.

Fast forward to yesterday afternoon and I received an email notification saying my lens is back in stock and getting ready to ship. Yes!!!!

But no. For no real reason other than excitement, I logged into my Nikon account to see if I could get any more info on the shipment only to find an "ERROR" listed next to the order. Click on the order and it says "Please Call" followed by an 800 number and hours only available M-F 9am-8pm. And of course, I found this out on Saturday afternoon of a long holiday weekend, meaning I can't call until Tuesday.

Credit card should be fine, so I'm at a loss and obviously annoyed that I have to wait a couple more days before finding out what's wrong. I'm even more annoyed that, to this point a day later, I've still only received the notification email saying it's almost ready to ship. I've not received any sort of notification of the error or need to call, which means if I hadn't taken the time (for no reason) to log into my account and check there, I'd still be thinking the order is on its way and wouldn't call them for any reason.

Of course, I'm also nervous now that there's a small batch ready to go and, since there's clearly an issue with my order, they could ship that lens to another NPS member or fill another order before I get to talk to them days from now since they're not open until Tuesday.

Just venting. Also curious if anyone else has experienced this. I'm hoping my NPS status will cause them to hold it and not ship to someone else before I can get in touch with them, but I'm not optimistic at this point. I have another work trip in a couple weeks that I could really use this lens for, and my local camera store doesn't rent Nikon lenses this long.

Sounds to me like there is an issue with the payment properly processing. There is so much card fraud nowadays that banks and cards are being super proactive about stopping payments that somehow get flagged. If you miss a call, email, or text from the bank or card Co. (possibly because you or some software screened it as junk or spam) and don’t secondarily approve it, the bank or card Co. will assume it’s a fraudulent transaction and stop payment. There’s nothing Nikon can do about it.

I have had that happen to me on an order through Nikon this past spring, and just yesterday I had it happen again on an order with an authorized Nikon dealer. Luckily I quickly caught and recognized the attempt to contact me by the bank as legitimate and I thereafter approved the transaction.

As far as the 400 f/4.5 lens, I saw the lens listed as in stock and immediately available at two different small retailers.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I suspect the same with a payment issue, but unfortunately I won't be able to find out until Tuesday.

Another factor is that I had the TC2.0 on the same order and that shipped previously, so perhaps that has something to do with a weird payment situation (they charge when it ships but the single order was split into two shipments, as both items were backordered and then became available at different times).

Who knows at this point. I just hope they don't ship it to someone else before I speak with them, then tell me I need to wait for the next batch. I could really use this one on my work trip later this month.
