No-Bumping Rule?

Just took a look at the posting rules again, and noticed this prohibition for the first time:

"Bumping - Deliberately 'bumping' your message back to the top of the forum with no new content."

I've been guilty of this many a times, as have other regulars here who've bumped up Challenge threads, or sometimes their own.

I can understand the logic behind such a rule--imagine if everyone bumped every other message, then we'd be inundated by contentless posts [insert joke about repetitive 828 threads]. However, I don't think what we do for the challenges or for an occasional unanswered message violates the spirit of the rule. Perhaps Phil Askey agrees, as he has not enforced the policy against us.

Just thought I'd bring this rule to STF's attention. Will you stop bumping?

I have a photographic memory, but I always seem to have the lens cap on.
 
I think the no bumping rule is a good rule that we should all try work with. But every good rule has exceptions. The challenges are part of the succes of STF and make it a true community. Bumping challenge threads has nothing to do with individuals begging for attention, it serves the community as a whole.

Conclusion: challenge threads add a lot of value to STF, they are of general interest for all STF visitors and therefore I never feel guilty at all for bumping a challenge related threads.

This is a good point. I think bumbing is certainly ok for at least important announcements (like the challenges) and unanswered questions, but there are many "serial-bumbers" who bumb their own threads, for somtimes no apparent reason than self promotion. Anyway, it's a fine line between a no-content-bumb post and an acceptable bumb post, isn't it..? Besides, at times the front page fill's in less than an hour.

Anyway, I've noticed that the interest rate of a post drops seriously, when it disappears from the front page (and I've certainly had many posts with no replies). So maybe another good idea would be for people to read a little further? How many people read to pages 2 and 3?

Btw. I think this thread is one of those threads that are ok to bumb and SHOULD be bumbed... ;)

Unless these forums get sticky posts, which I doubt would happen, since you'd need moderators also, certain things need to be bumped. Especially the Challenges, these do add great value and a nice sense of community.

And people comment on it and one wants to say thanks ?? Isn't that bumping? Or if say tons of us comment on a the same pic???

Responding to a challange (if I understand it correctly) is not bumping.

If you have a thread without responses and you, as the thread originator, add one of your own, this is bumping.

If you respond to a response to your thread that you do not agree it would not be bumping, either.

Just kidding. The no bumping rule is like the speed limit on NYC roads, good suggestions that are rarely heeded.

I have and will continue to bump the challenge threads. I usually go over pages 2-4 and look for orphans (posts with no responses) and make a short response just so the poster can hopefully get a response. If I see an interesting thread or some excellent pics that got overlooked during one of moments of hysteria I'll make a short response just to get it back in view again.
