Help needed, read the manual, searched the internet and still cannot work out what this means:

Sub-command dial zoom role]

Choose the role played by the sub-command dial in the zoom display.
  • Choose [Exposure setting] to change the role played by the sub-command dial in each mode.
  • Choose [Zoom] to use the sub-command dial to zoom in or out.
I can see the second, when I press Zoom I can then use the sub command dial to zoom in and out.

But what does Choose Exposure Setting do?

But what does Choose Exposure Setting do?
It sets what the front and rear control dials do in each mode.

For example, in Manual mode - Do you want the front dial to control Aperture or Shutter Speed? (and the rear dial will control the other).

Or in Aperture Priority mode - Which dial do you want to control the Aperture?

Isn’t that done through
f2- Exposure settings - then selecting each mode M/A/S/P

It has to do with when you're taking a photo and zooming (focus peaking). Exposure setting will change your... exposure (Aperture or Shutter) while zoomed in.

In zoom mode, it will zoom in and out, but not wider than the initial zoom-in, which makes it less useful IMO, so I'd leave it in change exposure.

On my Z6 iii, with F2=100% zoom, this sub command dial zoom has three steps, 50%, 100%, 200%. So it's one click each way from 100%. I expected that the Zf would work the same way?

Yes, the Zf in F2 of the control menu, with the OK button set to zoom on/off 100%, and the sub-command dial set to zoom role, turning the sub-command dial left after pressing the OK button zooms out to 50%, and turning it right zooms in to 200%.

But what does Choose Exposure Setting do?
If 'exposure setting' is selected for sub-command dial zoom role, I think turning the sub-command dial will act like turning the exposure compensation dial.

To be clear, I'd like it to go to 0% as well. ;)

I'm pretty sure it would be the front function for the mode your in, at least that would be more logical, and why Nikon would use the term setting not compensation. Compensation would be redundant. My sense of logic and terminology often gets me into trouble with foreign designed products.

Unless you were using easy exposure compensation which might further confuse things.

Yeah, it's quite confusing. I read that part of the manual again (page 600).

Sub-command dial zoom role

Choose the role played by the sub-command dial in the zoom display.
  • Choose [Exposure setting] to change the role played by the sub-command
    dial in each mode.
  • Choose [Zoom] to use the sub-command dial to zoom in or out.
With Exposure setting selected, turning the sub-command dial in zoom mode will adjust exposure compensation +/-.

With Zoom selected, turning the sub-command dial in zoom mode will indeed zoom in or out from the current magnification.

I only tried it in A and S mode.

I can get the zoom option to work

but the exposure compensation mode has no affect.

Are your main/sub settings same as these or the reverse? I can't figure out why if they are the same.

Mine did not show the exp comp on the sub command dial. So with further investigation I discovered that you need b2-Easy Exposure Composition option enabled first.

So problem resolved, now need to work out what option is best to use

Great that you have found the answer yourself. :-)

Page 547, a key sentence easily overlooked -

"Choose whether exposure compensation can be adjusted using a command dial when the exposure compensation dial is rotated to C in photo mode."

I have it set to On (Auto reset).
