Hi all,

I just got my new z6iii, as I upgraded from a z6i. I’m trying to set up everything, but I’ve grown used to change the main dial to aperture and the sub dial to shutter speed (from my d5500 days when I only had one dial and shot mostly in aperture mode).

in my z6i this can be done in menu f5 - customize command dials -> change main/sub -> exposure setting: on

However after hours of looking in the manual, YouTube video’s and googling, I still have to admit that I did not find the way to change the dials in the z6iii.

anyone already had this problem, and found the solution?

Thanks in advance for any help.

kind regards,

Could it be this?

It is much harder to find, but there are quite a few more options now. Nikon went a little crazy with the menu diving. Changing the naming structure from "change main/sub" to reverse is confusing because you can also REVERSE the direction of the dials.

F2 > Custom Controls (shooting) > fourth box up from the bottom right item.

It's quite confusing in the online z6 iii manual, and there's no screen shots of the many choices.

f2-custom controls --> right hand column "control dials". Click it for the options.

Exposure setting: The P, S, A, M modes can all be switched individually. "Av" is aperture, "Tv" is shutter speed. Swap with the 4-way controller.

~~~
I tried the "Sub-command dial zoom role" and I didn't find it useful for zoom. Just 3 steps of zoom in the shooting mode.
This made me find it, thanks a lot! Still have some setting up to do, but I'm almost ready to start shooting.
Find Steve Perry's setup videos. He goes through quite a few of them and explains them.
I've found it based on everyone's replies in this thread. I did check with Steve's video's. But they are so lengthy and you need to know when he starts to talk about it. Probably why I have missed it. I decided to check some shorter set-up movies first, but there they never mentioned it.
But yes, in hindsight Steve will probably have explained it.
Thanks for the help everyone!
Kind regards.
I just got a Z6 iii and had the same question about customizing the command dials. I watched Steve Perry's video on this and looked at the online Nikon documentation. It doesn't look like you can really customize the main control dial (on the front) and sub-command dial (on the top) very much at all. I found where you can reverse what they do (for example in Aperture priority mode you can swap which one controls aperture but cannot customize what the other dial does). Am I missing something?
I was used to having the command dial be the aperture, and the sub command dial be the shutter speed like my D610 was. After considerable poking around I found out how to do this. I made a little picture explanation because using text is cumbersome for explaining this. See below.
