Saturday night I was out in a questionable area, needles to say I was taking a shot in the middle of the street. I made sure that I was looking out for oncoming traffic. The street was empty for the most part, there was this shot that I had to take. 15 second exposure, a few seconds or so into the exposure I hear a large noise, a gargle of engine noise. Then out of the corner of my eye I spotted a car speeding in my direction, as it turned the corner I noticed the passenger door swing open….

The car did not stop but kept on speeding on, the passenger was trying to hold the door closed. As the car turned the corner the door came open fully, then was pulled half closed. They must have stolen the car and broken into it from the passenger side hence the door would not close. The noise was from a cold engine being gunned, petal to the metal late in that cold night the engine did not take kindly to this. I must have been an unusual site for them as well, they passed me wondering what I was doing here. I heard strange noises of music or singing from the vehicle as it sped by, it was all surreal.

Sensing this was not the greatest spot, and questioning this encounter I packed up my stuff, and drove off a few blocks till I noticed something else interesting (hydrant shot above).

In the background I could here the gargling noise of that car, circling the area I was just in. Either the chop shop was closed and they had to circle the block or they were looking for me.

These are all great. They really give a nice eery two-o-clock-in-the-morning kind of feel. You really nailed the chain link fence in the skyline picture.

Do you have your color settings cranked up to vivid? The saturation is great but I am wondering if it was through processing in camera or on the PC or, dare I hope, straight out of the camera.

If it was a bit of PP can you share some of your techniques?

I'll try to be careful but sometimes it just does not work :-). Good thing is that I only do the inner city in winter as this is the cleanest time to do city shots. Kind of keeps the bad element away.. well sort of :-)

Jad, I don't get too much into PP but I will go into what I did for this shot and talk about it a bit. For starters I checked the shot in Capture NX and the only thing done to the city fence shot was a WB adjusted to Sudium Vapor in NX. Everything else is set in camera for the most part.

The shot that had the most PP was the hydrant shot. There was too much red color in the shot from overhead lights. I had to adjust the WB by setting the grey point, but after doing so my reds sort of were muted, so I boosted color just a little bit. Like I said not much PP.

WB seems to be the one thing that I always need to tweek in post for night shots.

When I think about it, the skin on my back feels funny. I remeber I was in front of the hydrant thinking " WOW " snapped a shot or two and herd that roar in the distance...kind of brings new meaning to hair raising :-)

I would be interested in knowing what lens your were using as well?? Thanks these are some really great shots!!!!

Excellent shots, excellent color rendition, composition and "thereness". I was out until 6:00am last night wandering the streets and testing out my D300 too. I'm uploading the pictures to my Mac now, and if I get the results I was hoping for I'll add them to this nice gallery you started. Thanks!

WOW! I am impressed, those are awesome! I really am thinking hard about the D300 now, those are really sharp! Beautiful!

changing portrait photography one image at a time

yeah, i d definitely like to know what lens is giving you this amazingly sharp images from center to each corner !
The pictures are beautiful and so rich in colors.

Is there any chance you can post the before and after of the hydrant picture that you said you tweaked? it d be interesting to see the out of the camera result too

For landscape this is the lens. I have dropped this lens a few times already, I have to upload a shot so you can see the damage it has taken. But one thing is for sure it still takes great pictrues even with a stiff zoom ring.
