Sony is providing some nex6 to test out at a photo fair in KL this weekend. I'm going there to try it out. Problem is it's held indoors only, so other than the new PDAF focus speed, can you guys tell me what to look out for? How to test? I'll bring a spare SD card to take samples back if possible. There's also a pro local photog to give his thoughts on the cam. I'm upgrading from a nex5 so anything is a big step up for me. Hmmm I should bring my SEL 50 and 55-210 to compare the focussing speeds.

It'd be nice if you or someone else there could test some M mount rangefinder lenses on the camera, particularly 35mm and wider. :)

Indoors is fine, take some pictures of people in front of the (brightly lit) booths in the background. Does the Nex-6 focus on the people or on the background.

Also, shoot a fast series of people approaching you (rapidly). Are they in focus? All shots?

Video also, pan around, keeping people in the frame that are walking across from you, does the Nex-6 maintain focus?

Just for fun, do the same thing with a 5N or a 7 and watch the differences

Not sure focus speed will be dramatically different, but it would be nice to confirm this as well.

+1 WA RF glass test shots for color shift.

I use spot focus on my 5, no such problems, so which focus/mode to try this out?

Try using a faster E lens, in Aperture mode. The shallow DOF will make it very visible where the focus point is. Also choose an angle in which the backdrop of relatively far. Even spot focus will fail if the background had higher contrast on current Nex models.

This will be the fastest AF. It'd also be nice to know how the black-out time is between shots in continuous shooting mode.

Please do the the video overheat test. Record video for as long as you can to see if the overheat warning comes on. I know it's time consuming but do what you can.

Also neither the specs nor the manuals show any time limit for the 6 or 5r so it would be cool to know if there is a hard stop at 30 min or not.

Yup will bring my SEL50 and telezoom to test whether it hunts or not. My 5 tends to hunt. DOF will be narrow, so let's see.

Will try to test the video if I have the time.

And yes, spot focus on my 5 is sometimes off, will see if it happens frequently on the 6.

Thanks for reaching out and asking. I'm considering the same upgrade from NEX-5 to 6. The new camera it's 10-20% bigger weight and dimensions wise all aroundn which might stop me but I like the idea of it. I don't have time to read the other replies but could you please check centre sharpness with the SEL50 with and without PDAF/Hybrid focus on? If not the 50mm then the kit power zoom at about 30-40mm and about f5-6? There's a question mark on whether this new focus method will hurt centre sharpness. If it's very minor (i.e.: coming from a NEX-5 I don't see it then that would be good to know.

thanks in advance

Test ISO til 25600.

Compare the differences with NEX5 in lower ISO settings.

Hmmm, I wonder if you can actually turn off PDAF.

I tried Nex 7 and it's fairly similar to the 6. Don't mind it's slightly bigger, actually more comfortable to hold. Handgrip larger and deeper.

PDAF might not be compatible with the SEL50 yet so let's see if we can spot the PDAF cells, LOL.

Autofocus accuracy & speed in low-light conditions, using a high ISO setting (6400 or higher). If Nex-6 has AF assist light, then that turned off. This will be a good measure of AF for available light photography.

Thanks for asking and happy testing!

Take your cell phone along to see how difficult it is to link with the camera to use as a remote.

Going there shortly, hope to get me grubby hands on a unit to test it out.
