I very much doubt the 4k full FX. That translates to them having a very good sensor to processor readout and a powerful new processor. And this also means they have found a way to dissipate the heat.

I'd say, aps-c or even m4/3 size 4k. 35FF 4k video is a big thing.

Well - as far as I know, the WT-7 is not a wireless trigger - but a wireless transmitter :-)

Still no raw histograms orETTR exposure mode, things that have been requested for years by many more advanced shooters.

I very much doubt the 4k full FX. That translates to them having a very good sensor to processor readout and a powerful new processor. And this also means they have found a way to dissipate the heat.

I'd say, aps-c or even m4/3 size 4k. 35FF 4k video is a big thing.

One of the things I find interesting about the reported specs is the 45.75mp sensor. So if we were to translate this to APSC = 45.75/(1.5 x 1.5) = 20.3. Now the company that consistently produced 20.3mp apsc sensors that could be scaled up to 45.75mp FF sensors was Samsung.

Now Samsung is the one company that can compete with Sony for sensors (and have even been ahead of them before.) So it is quite possible/speculative/guess that the D850 has a Samsung sensor. In which case its performance, whilst unknown, will be good to very good indeed.

Yes there were rumors about Nikon acquiring Samsung tech

Most probably it's a Sony made ( designed by who?) sensor

--

Out of interest - what makes you say it is 'most probably' a Sony made sensor (apart from the historic relationship). I mean Occam's Razer would suggest that a manufacturer that already been making sensors with a pixel density that scales are to 45.75mp is far more likely than one that hasnt. Sony would be more likely to say see what you can do with this fantastic 42mp sensor.

Samsung sensor tech is at least as good as Sony's. If you buy a Galaxy S7 or S6 you cant even tell which company's image sensor you have unless you rigorously check and Samsung was the first company to bring BSI to large sensor cameras. And from Nikon's perspective why we would they wish to be dependent on a competitor?

I would like it to be a Samsung sensor Sony needs competition but I've seen very little activity from Samsung and lager sensors since the NX1

Well that might be exactly the point.

Here is a market share breakdown from 2014 but from the FT...

edab2e0a30824ae9802aca4295c08024.jpg

Sony clearly dominates. Omnivision is a low end manufacturer (Sony smartphone sensors at roughly US$7 are about 3x Omnivision average). FF sensors are much more expensive - I read a figure of US$250 for a pretty standard 24mp FF sensor.

So it clearly makes sense for Samsung to be in the larger sensor game. And rather than producing a few good cameras that almost noone buys why not manufacture for a third party that pretty much everyone buys.....

And is it wise for Nikon to settle for second best?

Sony does 4k without cropping on their A7S II, A7RII and A99II

--

The A7R ii 4k is aps-c/super 35 crop. I believe the A99 ii also uses super 35 or aps-c size 4k. So, all crop their 4k.

The A7R II can do full frame 4k, it has a Super 35 mode which has the benefit of even less noise with a crop. So you can choose 4k full frame (FX) or Super 35 (DX) with less noise.

As for the D850, it looks good to me. Not as high megapixel as I expected, but it's much more impressive than Canon's flagship update (5D IV).

I'm curious to see what the DR will be like as the D500 and D7500 both have lower DR than cameras that came before them.

.. about making custom banks useable?
To me - and my use, they certainly are useable - and far more usable than "User Exposure Settings" as the U1 and U2 on my D7000.

Being able to select different exposure modes in any of the User Banks combinations is one of the "pro" lay-out features being deal-breaking to me.
