I'm looking for a good entry camera from Nikon and for a while I had my eyes on the 5000 series but not sure which to pick. Of them all, I don't trust the 5700 for my need.

I'm looking for: quality uncompressed files, detailed macro, quality color, manual settings options.

Can anyone give me some pointers and recommendations? I'm also consdering moving up the scale towards the 7000's but the trouble is I live in Romania and when things get here they become very expensive (a 7000's series camera goes around $850).

I'm sold on the 8800. You did not mention "speed" anywhere. About the only "weakness" I have found in my 8800 is speed in autofocus under some conditions, and speed in writing RAW files. The manual focus is slightly awkward, but is not usually a show-stopper.

You can manually set all other exposure settings, and one thing I really like better than film - - you can pre-set the white balance when using other lighting. Like, when using non-standard incandescent bulbs, you don't need an extra filter, just put a white piece of paper and tell it to measure white... then all the white is really white.
