Your pbase site is very informative.

These cameras can prduce RAW images, and you have the option of converting these into 16 bit images to be saved as TIFFs.

If you have the Photoshop Plugin version of Neat Image, you can bring your RAW image directly into Photoshop, using the updated version of Adobe Camera Raw, or MRWFormat.

Then you can filter it while still in 16 bit mode, and when you have completed all your bringhtness and color corrections, finally save it as a 16 bit tiff or psd file, or to an 8 bit jpeg.

Although these are 16 bit images, the camera really only saves 12 bits, but that still means that for each color there are 4 more bits, permitting 16 times as many possible steps between totally black and totally white. (4096 steps instead of 256.)

This gives you more latitude for correcting exposure or color problems without getting ugly looking color - posterization.

So if you want the best quality final images, you will want to use RAW at least some of the time, and do your editing in 16 bit mode.

If you do not want to bother with RAW mode and all that, your camera will provide 8 bit images, and there is no advantage in having a 16 bit noise reducer.

Neat Image has just posted version 4.0, which is a big improvement in quality and speed. They have a free demo version also.
