Moving LRC to new PC using OneDrive

A couple of months ago I bought a new PC and used a hard drive to move the lightroom folder and my RAWs. This was pretty easy. I just needed to put the folder into the same location, and install my presets (also copied to the hard drive). Unfortunately it turned out that the new PC had a defect, and it had to be reset in the warranty repair. I don't have the folder on my hard drive this time (only all the RAWs), but it's still in the same spot through onedrive (completely up to date aswell). When I set up the PC again, what is the easiest way to get the Lightroom folder with all its content downloaded to the PC through OneDrive? Is there an option to download all files from the folder? When I setup OneDrive on a new PC, everything will just be a shortut until I download it. I could potensially move the OneDrive folder to my hard drive, but I don't know if the actual folder will move, or just the OneDrive "shortcut" for it.

This might be very easy, but I just want to make sure that I do it the right way so that everything will happen smoothly.

Your favorite internet search engine has the answer!

Search for

download all files from OneDrive

One of the advantages of OneDrive (IMO) is it's ability to selectively download individual folders/files. Right click on the folder and select Always keep on this device.

Conversely, you can also cleanse a system of any files/folders you had already downloaded, but no longer need.

It's really critical to actually run the LrC catalog from the fastest drive you have. That is usually an internal SSD. The catalog and preview folders are all in one LrC folder. Keep them together.

People are constantly reporting issues with trying to run the LrC folder from OneDrive. That is a big source of catalog corruption.

Thank you. If I click "Always keep on this device", and wait for everything to download, I am now running it from the SSD and not Onedrive, correct?

As an update it did run into problem, but I suspect that this was because I didn't connect my hard drive first, and about 80% of my RAWs were located in that hard drive.

If OneDrive is enabled for the folder on the SSD (is it?) with your Lightroom Classic catalog, then you will still run into problems keeping your catalog files and/or images in a folder that syncs to "the cloud". Your statement that you clicked on "Always keep on this device" indicates that the folder is still synced to the cloud. The fact that the file is on your device does not eliminate the problems caused by OneDrive.

Best (and in my opinion, it is mandatory not optional) to turn off OneDrive for any folder containing Lightroom Classic files or the original images.

Hmm okay, makes sense. However, I have had it synced with Onedrive since the beginning, and never encountered any problems. I did move LrC to a new PC before, but that time I transferred the folder to a hard drive and then back to its location. However that time it also synced with Onedrive before running it all in LrC. Everything was intact, nothing was lost. The thing is, if my PC fails like last time, atleast OneDrive has all my files updated. Continously moving the updated files to a hard drive is time consuming. Maybe it would be safer to download the files through "allways keep..", then turn off sync before loading up LrC for the first time, and after that I can turn sync back on?

Just because you have not had problems yet does not mean you will not have problems in the future. Ken Seals said earlier in this thread: "People are constantly reporting issues with trying to run the LrC folder from OneDrive. That is a big source of catalog corruption." Its very risky, and unnecessarily risky.

Make backups of your LrC catalog via the built-in LrC backup feature. Store those on OneDrive. Do not store your working catalog in a folder synced with OneDrive.

You can make lots of arguments about how its safe to put your working catalog in a folder synced to OneDrive, I don't buy any of them. And if you don't believe me, you should believe Ken Seals.

Sure, I'm just a bit confused as to why the exact same action would have a different outcome the next time around. But what do I know.

You tell OneDrive not to sync specific (or all) folders where your working LrC catalog is located and where your LrC images are located. Moving is not necessary.

May I ask. It seems like I have to move the entire folder out of the "pictures" section to make it stop syncing? I don't want to diable sync for every folder in the "pictures" section of my PC. Is it safe to move the LR folder to something like "downloads"? Would I have to reopen the latest catalog when starting up Lightoom again, or will it still use the file after moving the location of it?
Move it to a folder (anywhere) and specify to OneDrive to not sync it. I would not use the Downloads folder, as that is usually considered "tempporary" storage. However, if it is in a sub folder under My Photos, you can just mark that one folder to not be synced.

A little late to the game but yes. The catalogue is a database which is very small so there is no real reason to keep it on another drive. The Previews folder can be big but can be rebuilt easily. Mine is currently 30GB and even with a 500GB internal drive I have plenty of space.

The catalogue is the most important part. I’ve kept mine and the Previews on the internal drive since 2011 and never a single issue.

All files are on external drives.

I went to account - choose folders, and this is what I get. I can't find any other option in OneDrive settings. This is why I asked, because I have tried this before, and back then I was also unable to select specific folders in the main sections like "pictures".

If there is not another way of doing this - is it safe to move the entire folder to "music" or "downloads", or some location like that? Will everything work as normal when I start up Lightroom again, even if I have moved all the files?

Not sure I understood your point about sub folder, but maybe you have a solution there.

See my most recent response here. OneDrive doesn't let me do that when it's in the pictures section. This is the reason why I was asking, because I tried to do this another time, and couldn't figure out how, other than moving it to a different section like "downloads".

And yet a simple internet search turns up instructions on how to stop OneDrive from syncing specific folders.

How smart you are. That is the instructions I followed.

I did that, and as already presented, and the options are greyed out. I cannot perform magic unfortunately. In that same link this note is written:

In my respons to you I referred to my last post in this thread, which had that info. A google search only gives me information about how it is not possible to unsync folders in the pictures section. I have been spending time on google both last time and this time, and it seems like I have to move the entire Lightroom folder to something like "downloads" or "music". So unless someone knows a way of doing it, I'll ask again. Can I just move the folder to a different section, and then it will still open as normal with everything in place? Or may I need to reconnect the files to Lightroom?

Nevermind. I have moved the folder to the C: folders section, which doesn't sync, and after that I reopened the catalog in LR. It was easy and without any issues.
