Gearing up to buy a MK-II in next few days.
Currently own a 10D.

I've been reading that the MK-II is faster and better overall.

The fact that the 10D isn't "instant on" bothers me.
I think the MK-II isn't also.
How do you guys/girls deal with this ?
I missed some important whale pictures because the camera was OFF.

What about the weight and size of the Mark-II.
Does it bother you ?
I got used to the Canon with the battery pack finally.
All my lenses are IS and USM so they are also heavy to start.

I'm planning on keeping the 10-D.
Should I or will I stop using it ?

Thanks, Anxious

On the !D Mark II, by the time you get your finger on the shutter button after turning it on, it's ready to go. It is instant on for all practical purposes.

I may keep my 10D as a backup. I'm starting a photo business and feel this is important. However, the 10D has not been touched since the arrival of my MII. My MII produces much better images in all respects.

Also, some members of the 10D forum insisted that AF problems I experienced were operator errors and not 10D failings. I find it interesting that these problems vanish when shooting with my MII.

Peace,
Bob

Yes. But you will see slower startup when using slower cards, especially microdrives. With Sandisk Ultra II it is as you said, when I power on and raise the camera up it is ready.

I don't know why but my SD card powers on in about .2 seconds or less as does my 2.2 GB MD CF card when I formated it to FAT32.

Yes. much. For fastest performance, shoot with SD cards and not CF cards.

It is almost "instant on". I get about .2 seconds.

Not at all. Would it be great if it only weighed 1 oz and stored in a special hyper-space chamber until needed... Sure... But that ain't going to happen anytime soon.

Only you know that one. I still use my 1D from time to time. Not much but from time to time.

Often times, it was the 10D's fault for the chronic soft focus.

I'm not one to run to blaming the equipment, but my first 10D was too soft, and it's replacement was razor sharp.

I can assure you that some 10D's did in fact have focus issues, as I know first hand.

Does it have to be a certain cluster size, like 32K? The default, if you don't specify, is 4K and that probably does not make a difference.

I still use my 10D because there are times I want to have two lenses available quickly. But the more I use my Mark II, the longer the startup time of the 10D seems. I frequently put the 10D up to my eye, touch the shutter button to focus and then pull it down from my eye to see if it is turned on. Of course it always is....... it just isn't functioning until it comes out of standby mode. I have missed some shots because of this delay.

The Mark II is ready as soon as I am.

I recently shot at a race track with the MK II and I was worried about the same thing. So here's what i did.

The MKII has a "auto-off" feature which I think was set to one minute in my case. So all I did was have my finger ready on the shutter button (which when pressed, would wake the camera up). As I saw a car come around, I would hit the button as i was bringing it up to my face. By the time it got there, the camera is ready to shoot.

As far as the size and weight go, I really have no problem with it until I attach the strobaframe with the 550 flash. Then it gets a little rough, other then that, I find that the MKII with the 28-70 lense are balanced quite well.

I made that jump this spring. I love the mkII and the weight is not enough heavier than the 10D with grip to bother me. It's a whole different class of camera.

I has to have a giggle to myself when Phil rated the .8 second start-up time as a Con is his conclussion on the MarkII.

He also rated the 1D/1Ds compatible battery as a Con. At least he put a note in the review stating that most are reporting phenomenal battery life.

I have a 10D, and haven't touched or missed it since I got my MarkII. In fact I just sold a second (older) 10D today at http://photography-on-the.net/forum/index.php . I'm only keeping the other 10D as a back up to the mark II....I love this camera! BTW, if you are out whale watching set the camera so it doesn't shut down. Or at least a long shut down time. Seems simple to me.

No problem. For all practical purposes, it is "instant." The actual time is a small fraction of a second.

No problem. The MK II is only slightly heavier (3/4 pound) than my 10D with the portrait grip.

I'm keeping mine as a backup body.

But the advantages (that I think Phil strongly overlooked) was that now with the 1Ds/1D/1D Mk II is that you have a single charging system and a single battery system. This compared to re-inventing things and making things incompatible every few years. To me, the compatibility with the 1D is more than worth 200g of weight.

That, and the battery life of the D2H, while very good, seems to be somewhat behind the 1D Mk II. I think the best part of the D2H is the meter that estimates the number of shots left.

Steven

Steven
Yes, but isn't the Nikon D2H getting very good battery life too
with it's Li Ion, which comes in 200+g lighter.
