First, thanks to all that participated, both with entries and comments.

It's my first time running a challenge and, well, what a challenge it is to choose finalists and winners! So many great shots of many different types. I've been over it since yesterday, even though I had seen all images when they were posted and had some idea about my favourites already.

I have selected 18 images, 12 honourable mentions and 6 for the final top 5 classification (two tied in 5th). The 12 HM pics are in alphabetical order of login/names, no classification intended, the last 5 in reverse order. I decided to use at most one image of each participant, the best as I saw it. Without further ado, here are the results.

My criteria (in order of importance): impact/subject, composition, shooting techique, pp technique.

Alexis - Xmas in Sion, Switzerland
A technically perfect night shot, nice composition

b. c. - Old Town Stockholm

I love the light tone colors of this one, as well tas the vertical geometric composition

Bob Blount - Glacier Bay, Alaska

Great moody shot, it just lost out to Jagzzzzzz's pano the place among the top 5.

Burlof

I liked the effect and the somewhat out-of-this-world's feeling of this image. (I also like the phone image!)

conebeam - Pyramids rising through the concrete jungle

I like the theme very much, and the shot itself. I think it could be improved in PP, with some added contrast and colors.

Gail (oliag) - Tuscany, Italy

Gail, I loved this image from the moment you posted it. It's almost perfect (check the horizon level though!!!), could have made the final 5 ...
BTW: it was removed from Flickr when I tried to download it.

jpmalohesr - Arches NP, Utah/USA
A postcard, perfectly executed.

Linda - Island of Gozo

Great shot, I loved the contrast between old people and "youth centre" sign. Another strong entry.

Loose_Cannon - desert
You just missed the top5 because of the Taj Mahal shot by bomobob!

slieb25 - You lookin' at me? (Mountain Goat on top of Mt Evans)
This is pure impact, also nicely done, great shot!

sue anne - Chunks of the Hubbard Glacier in Alaska
I like the abstract touch on this one.

Teri - Quebec City

What an effect! I think cropping out the street on this one would make it even more interesting, more mysterious.

Now the top 5 places, including winner. Just one remark: any of these could be in the National Geo Mag IMO (as well as some above):

5th- Tie:
crissw - santorini greece
Great colors, composition, very good travel shot.

Jagzzzzzz - Ushuaia, Argentina
Great pano, wonderful place.

4th- whipped - River in bloom

This one could have won it, maybe I find the boats on the left just a bit distracting. Anyway, a perfect shot!

3rd - Richard J M - My photo Gal in Hawaii

I have to say you went up and down in the 3 top places since yesterday. Great eye to see this, most would have missed it.

2nd - Jim B MSP - Kyoto Across Generations

Great, Jim. Nothing to say about it, the expression of the facing lady is just the cherry topping it.

bomobob - Taj Mahal, India

Well, perfect moment, composition, lighting and execution. Perfect focus and bokeh. Perfect color (orange is an important color in many oriental cultures). I also loved the position of left foot, a clear indication of spiritual movement implied by the whole image.

Renato,

Thanks for running the challenge. Just some great images and so hard to chose but you did a wonderful job. I have to admit that winning image stuck in my head from the moment I saw it. Something very simple yet very powerful about that woman at the shrine in India. Thanks and congratulations to all.

You're welcome, I really liked your Photog Gal's pic, wonderful unexpected setting, not so easy to do with a P&S.

congratulations bomobob for the winning shot, and to the other winners and HMs. and thanks Renato for choosing one of mine among the HMs and for being a fine host! it was fun to see the wide variety of locations and all the terrific shots in this challenge.

a very fine photo. And congratulations to the other winners and HMs.
Thanks Renato for choosing mine as 2nd place; and for being a fine host!

You could have easily chose so many other photos; so many outstanding submissions.

This was a great topic. The only problem I had with it - so many great photos to look at, and places to dream about. I have probably added another dozen places to visit on my "travel wish list".

You're welcome. Your image is outstanding and certainly the best street/candid pic of all.

Indeed.

Travelling photography is a classic, NGM is here to prove it. The way I tried to judge these images, as I mentioned, was to think: would this image work in a feature ain NGM with appropriate theme? I think about all chosen, inlcuding the HMs, would fit it.

Congrats to Bomobob first 1st place and to all other top 5 and HMs. There were so many excellent photos that it must have been difficult to chose only 5. Glad I didn't have to do it :) Great job Renato and thanks for top pic consideration.

Well done to all the winners and HMs and congratulations to Renato for running this so professionally and spending time commenting about each and every one of the extended list of HMs and winners. Thanx also for picking one of mine.

Dear Renato:

Can you please post the images before PP, so that I can learn which are the areas that you worked? These two images are wonderful.

Thanks again.

Thanks for interest.

I'm at work now, I'll post originals and also talk a bit about how I do local adjustments later (there's no cloning or real image editing in my images, in the sense of using parts of different images, just luminosity and color management).

Congrats to the winner. Thanks for the HM and congrats to the other HM winners.

I truly enjoyed this contest. There were so many beautiful pictures from around the world. As you said, many good enough for National Geography.

bomobob for your win..your picture is wonderful - a well deserved win in a challenge that must have been very difficult to judge! Congrats to all the other winners and HMs too...and thanks Renato for giving my Florence pic an HM.

When I edited the picture alignment I deleted the original picture from flickr which I now realize I should have kept...sorry!
