When mounting a vintage M42 manual lens, such as Takumar 50mm, on my Canon R bodies with the M42 to R adapter, the aperture ring ends up on the underside of the lens, not the top where I could see it. Any thoughts on this?

Some adapters have 3 or 4 tiny screws around the barrel of the adapter to allow rotation of the lens. If yours does, you can use fine jeweler's screwdrivers to back off the screws a bit, rotate the lens to the desired position, then tighten them again.

Thank you, I will check that out.

Different adapters may have the thread in a different orientation. Some threaded adapters allow you to rotate the threaded insert. You may have to experiment.
