For a project I am looking for a program or Photoshop plugin etc that can do a good cartoon effect from a photographed image in a style a little like how Disneys older true drawn, not 3D rendered, material looks.

Any ideas?

Thanks and best regards!

Try G'mic. Works fine as a plugin. It's free.

Thanks!

Very easy installation if one uses the Adobe Exchange link also.

And the result is the best sofar. It overdoes it, but since I can let it run on its own layer in Photoshop and then set down the opacity this might work!

I have tried Topaz Labs old Studio2 which includes a ton of effects (it is in much based on their older Photoshop plugins) and it works quite well on cartooning backgrounds, but not so good on people. I might combine it with G'mic in layers and some masking.

I also tested a program from CyberLink called PhotoDirector which also is available as a webpage called myedit.online that can do very good results at a first look, but those modes only work on faces not on whole scenes. If one lets it do full body/full scene in another of its modes it seems it swaps out to much so it kills the original scene.

I also tried FotoSketcher and Photofiltre but none of them produced the result I am after really.

G'mic has a lot of sliders that can be used.

Another option is Filter Forge. There are thousands of presents that may suit. Most free. Most, if not all, have adjustments. You can even create your own preset or modify an existing one. Filter Forge is a very powerful tool. Especially if you dive into creating your own preset.

Thanks! I had a look at it quickly and it might be an alternative if my current solution won't work.

Though at the moment I think I have found a good enough solution. I use Topaz Labs Studio2 and its Flat1 preset in combination with G'Mic ComicStrip filter and some Photoshop layering and I get results like the below image.

The below image is one of my earlier photos which I used for testing and the new project will be shot in another setting and in another light which off course can throw the effectiveness of my solution off. I have tested it also on some other images with good results so I have hopes it will also work for the images we will shot in this new project where I need some of them to be in a cartoon style.

I am on a Windows PC so no Affinity Photo for me. The Cartoons & Pop Art plugin for Photoshop seems quite nice and 15.5 Euro is a fair price, I might try it.

I bought it, even though I think I have a good solution already, this gives one more alternative and also which was the main reason for my purchase, it makes speech bubbles super easy to add.

Great, glad you found an additional tool to help with your work.

BTW, Panos has a bunch of free actions on his site as well as a bundle for all the actions. Some are really not useful so if you only have a need that is met using one then it is cheaper to buy the one only.

However, if you want to play with all kinds of effects his bundles are pretty reasonably priced.

I've been searching forever for a good watercolour preset/editor. I've found good ones but not great ones. The problem is that every image is different so the preset acts differently. I'm guessing that cartoon presets will be the same. So a number of options may be the best solution.
