lens in Hong Kong

Base on this url lens in Hong Kong are average 20% cheaper than where
i live in Singapore. Are they reliable? Will the warranty be
international? Anyone experienced? I am hoping to get 17-55, 70-300
and SB-800 for my newly acquired D200.

Lenses in Hong Kong are definitely cheaper; however, you either need to be able to pose like a total local and speak like a total local or get a local to help. There is a particular shop in Mong Kok that I use when I'm there (not Wing Shing) that I find has very good service and very good prices, even when I use a Credit Card to pay.

Another option for you since you are in Singapore is to ask "sykestang" in ClubSnap.

Its definitely cheaper in Hong Kong. Before you go, research the prices of the lenses you want to buy since most of the time they overprice the lenses over there. You really need to know how to haggle in order to get really good prices. Make sure you get a lens with an international warranty.

Here is picture inside a camera store along Nathan road in HK when I was trying out the sigma 10-20:

so i guess i just have to bargin and make sure it comes with international warranty. Any recommended shops to go for in Mongkok? I won't be carrying so much cash so will definately use VISA for the purchase. Will that impose extra $?

Pls. no bargain with Natan Road camera shops, just stay away from them (tourist trap). When I go to HK I like to go to Sim City (pronounced as Sing Chai) shopping mall, near to Mongkok MTR . Some interesting camera/computer shops inside. You also can check Wing Shing. About paying with VISA, I think some may have some extra charge when you do, but not sure how much.

Yes, stay away from 'most' Nathan Road shops UNLESS you can pass yourself off as a local and know how to bargin with them. I have bought from Nathan Road shops before and have been able to get very very good prices and even paid by credit card. Again, ONLY if you can pass off as a local.

Another rule-of-thumb is to stay away from any shop that says "Tax Free" because the whole of Hong Kong is Tax Free. Also, don't go into any shop with big neon Sony signs.

The shop I like is Coxell at 9/F Yau Shing Commercial Centre, 51 Sai Yeung Choi Street, Mong Kok. They gave great service and the prices are very close to the Dragon.net listing that you have inclusive of Credit Card charges (after bargining of course).

I have even managed to bargin at shops on the 10/11/F of Time Square in Causeway Bay to the extent of the price being about 2-3% above the Dragon.net listing inclusive of Credit Card charges.

Good luck in your shopping quest. The hunt (vs chase in another context) is 1/2 the fun. If you dare, if you don't like a price at any shop, just say very loudly that their prices are crazy and are a rip off in Cantonese as you walk out of the shop and see their reaction, they just might come back with a great price; but just know when and where and how to do that....

These prices are incredible

You could easily recoup the flight cost from the UK with the savings my wish-list
Too good to be true?

Thanks for all the suggestion. Is 1-to-1 exchange common in HK? Say a len is found fungus/not working after leaving the shop within the 1st week of purchase. will the shop exchange another copy FOC?

From those responses so far it really seem to be true. Just the matter which good shop you are buying from and worry a little on the exchange policy. I have already called local Nikon to confirm that as long as the purchase is from an authorised dealer in HK with worldwide warranty aftersales service shouldn't be issue at all.

Now as long as i understand the exchange policy there i am ready for my shopping next week. Hope this would be good experience.

The prices on that website are pretty accurate, useful as reference and back you up when you go bargaining. Never go to buy in Tsim Sha Tsui, unless you are prepared to be ripped off, or at best having to buy at a premium. In the worse scenario, you wander into a "black" shop, pay a lot more, misled ino buying something else and get something dodgy.

I always buy from Wing Shing, 55-57 Sai Yeung Choi Street in Mongkok through friends or on my own trips to Hong Kong. What I like about them is they don't keep you waiting for a lens too long. The 70-200VR was out of stock for more than 2 months. They got one for me from another camera shop (called CITICALL), just a few days before my friend's trip here. That's customer service.

As always, "caveat emptor", I check my goods carefully before I buy. In one incident, I rejected 3 bad copies of the Leica Elmarit 28mm from the other Shing and ended up buying at the airport; only slightly more expensive, and a very good copy though.

Yes, get them to bring out a few copies for your to choose. I once made the shop bring out their entire stock of a particular lens to choose from.

Thanks for everyone's good suggestion. Now i am Hong Kong and already been to many shops in Mongkok including Wing Shing. Price quoted from them were 10% higher the URL i have. Both 17-55 and 70-200 have no stock.... Looks like these 2 lens are in high demand in Hong Kong. Causeway Bay will be my next target....

Hi Tomothy, I am sure you are having a great time there. Have you checked the Citicall chain shops? That's where I got my 70-200. Have you been to the used camera shops on 15-16 Kimberley Road, Tsim Sha Tsui? I am not asking you to buy there, but there are thousands of used cameras and lenses to see there. It's interesting and fun!

Good luck with your search!

If you get a chance try to go to Cameroon Photo. He is in TST East exactly opposite the Shangrila Hotel. You should be able to get most lenses there and he is one of the suppliers to the smallers shops around, so prices and goods are genuine.

My friend bought the 70-200 for me at HK$11600 a month ago.

This shop you went knew that they could charge a premium because the entire city is out of stock. Wish you luck.
