Not a photo question but I’m coming from windows and getting a mac mini. I’m going to use my Logitech keyboard and mouse that I have had with my windows computer. Can I use ctrl C and ctrl V among other shortcuts on the mac. This keyboard won’t have the command key so will mac recognize certain short cuts or is there a way to program them in settings

The Alt key will map to the Mac Option key. The Windows key will map to the Mac Command key. Control remains Control.

In System Prefernces -> Keyboard, you'll also find an option to remap modifier keys.

Perfect answer.

If you want more control over key mappings I recommend the free and open source software Karabiner https://karabiner-elements.pqrs.org/

I have, for example, remapped the caps lock key to be backspace as I find it much easier to hit there.

Interesting. What's unclear is whether it applies to any application or to the Finder only.

TIA.

The documentation gives an example of a complex modifier to "change [the] control-h key to delete_or_backspace except in Terminal."

https://karabiner-elements.pqrs.org/docs/

So yes, I think it can remap keystrokes for most (if not all) applications – but you must grant permission to load its system extensions, and let them "receive keystrokes from any application."

It also lists some current limitations:
  • The program can't modify the eject key on some keyboards – supposedly this is a limitation of a macOS API.
  • The program can't modify the fn key on non-Apple keyboards like Logitech ones.
  • The program ignores the standard System Preferences modifier key remappings

There is nothing in the documentation suggesting you can modify shortcuts in an application.

Thanks anyway. :-)

Nick
