J5 has long delay between shots

About 6 months ago, I picked up a used Nikon J5. I've noticed that after taking a single photo, the camera takes roughly 3 seconds before getting ready for the next shot. The only other camera I've used that was this slow was the Sigma DP1s.

Strangely, the delay between shots seems almost the same whether I take a single shot or a short burst. This is quite frustrating, especially since my main reason for buying the J5 was to have a lightweight setup for birding.

Could this be due to the memory card I'm using? The camera came with this microSD card:
https://www.amazon.com/Kioxia-Exceria-MicroSD-MicroSDHC-Smartphone/dp/B09WJQKDPZ
Is this card really that slow?

I’m also wondering if there might be some incorrect camera settings causing this behavior. From what I’ve read, the J5 has a buffer of around 20 frames—so why would it need to flush the buffer after just one photo? None of my other Nikon bodies behave like this.

No such problem on my J5. Happily chugs along at all necessary fps witha Sandisk Extreme Pro card & 10-30mm PD and 30-100mm and 70-300mm. I know nothing about your micro SD card.

I have never heard of that card brand, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the card. If a camera takes time to be ready for a follow up shot, it would indicate that the buffer is full but that makes no sense if you are not shooting long bursts in continuous mode. The J5 does not have a very large buffer compared to the V models.

There is definitely something wrong here. I suspect the microSD card - I’ve never heard of that brand and cannot find anything about it on line.
  • Do you have any other card to try? Or another device that uses that card?
  • Have you formatted it in the camera?
  • What does the capacity of the card show when you check it on a computer?
  • What shows up in the bottom right corner of the rear display where the free space on the card is shown?
  • Do you have Image review set to Off in the Wrench section of the menu?
  • What shooting mode are you using?
  • Is Long exposure noise reduction Off?
  • Is High ISO noise reduction Off?

An off-brand memory card might cause a variety of problems. If the slowness persists after formatting (and with proper camera settings), I'd get a new SanDisk card - and not from Amazon. I'd get it from a reliable brick-and-mortar source like Best Buy in the US.

Excellent suggestions, all, Rich!

Never found any speed issues with my J5 (just tried several shots, taken manually, indoors in low light, using the 70-300 CX, and managed around three shots per second (including refocusing), and series-shooting would be much faster.

More questions:
  • what lens are you using? It might be possible that the aperture in the lens has failed. That could result in the aperture being barely open and pushing the shutter speed to a slow value.
  • does the image on the LCD appear quite dark and slowly brighten before you take a photo?
  • has this problem existed since you bought the camera, or only started happening recently?

Gentlemen, gentlewomen and binary persons: Particularly because this is Pride Day in British Columbia, I'm doubly shocked by the expression of such discriminatory language against certain memory cards. The principles of DEI as applied to digital products dictate that meritocracy has no place in either the selection or the evaluation process. Any further aspersions towards specific micro SDs will leave me no choice but to report the offender to the Digital Rights Commission of the jurisdiction in which "they" reside.

On a more serious note, does a three-dimensional form initiate the formation of a gravitational force or does gravitational force initiate the formation of a three-dimensional form?

I used either the Nikon 1 18.5 lens or FX 70-300 lens through FT1, the same delays between shots.

I didn't notice any change in brightness on LCD over time.

I don't quite remember the situation when the camera first arrived. I can't exclude the possibility that it did not behave like this months ago, otherwise I should had noticed the problem then?

I formatted the card before use. I currently don't own any other microSD.

I turned the image review off. The "memory card access lamp" still flashed for several seconds after a single shot. However, with this change, the camera allowed me to take the next shots during this period of time.

I haven't yet checked the other issues you mentioned...

With image review off, can you take another photo immediately? This may be a stupid question, but were you waiting to try another shot until the image review turned off?

I suggest going to the menu to reset the settings and taking a test shot again, in case the delay is caused by the current settings.

With the image review off, I could take another photo immediately after the first one, even while the memory card access lamp was still flashing.

Will try that and see.
