What is your "maximum comfortable" ISO, while shooting?

In other words, what is the maximum ISO level you use while shooting without any reservations about it.

I don't want the maximum ISO level you use, be it regularly or occasionally, based on absolute exposure conditions that may dictate it, in spite of any reservations.

I want the Maximum ISO that you dial in without even thinking about noise levels or post processing.

There is quite a difference between ISO 800 and ISO1600 I think (and then much more need to expose erring towards the highlights, but without clipping them).

I am HOPING that an APS-H crop or FF '3D' (or whatever sister to 7D) will give me my 'ISO 800' level at ISO 3200

350D ISO 400 and 5D ISO 800

I like that the 5D has about 1 stop better noise performance at every ISO setting

Unfortunately both start to get pattern noise at ISO 1600 which becomes pretty much unacceptable at ISO 3200.

BTW ISO 3200 with a 350D is a one stop underexposed ISO 1600 photo corrected during raw processing. The 5D and many xxD cameras do the same in their camera firmware.

Actually I'm generally happy with results at 800, and sometimes 1600 - but a lot depends on subject. As the original poster suggested, 400 is the max I will use with no conditionals or reservations on subject matter or intended use.

I'm occasionally forced to use 3200, but I like to stop at 1600. Available light in my church is not good. I take a lot of photos there. I'd love another stop with the 5D mkII but I really don't need those huge files or video.

If ISO was continuous (like the zoom of a lens) then ISO 700 on the 5D and ISO 500 on the 1D2n.

ISO 800 is normally where I start to think about image degradation.

I will use ISO 1600 on all three without a problem if the photo I'm looking for is not based on IQ (resolution, tonality, color accuracy).
