OK, this little thread is going to be all about the speed of your editor and the speed of your PC. What I want to know is simple:

1) the make and model of your PC
2) whether is is AMD or Intel (or Mac.. ok, I'm a good guy tonight)
3) processor speed (Pentium 4, Pentium 2, AMD XP+ 2.2Ghz, etc.)
4) RAM type and amount (RDRAM, DDRAM, SDRAM, etc.)
5) Hard drive size and speed (7200 RPM, 5400 RPM, etc.)
6) image editor (Photoshop, Elements, PSP, PhotoPaint, etc.)

Now, please re-boot up your computer. Once that is done, take a stopwatch.

Start the timer immediately when you've clicked to start your image editor.

HOW LONG does it take before your editor is up and ready for you to use it?

Thanks for the interesting data you'll be able to provide.

9 seconds using AC power. (i've got too many fonts open in ATM which slows it down by at least a couple of seconds while photoshop reads them all)

Ulysses,

The first is a:

G4 500Mhz Dual Processor
768 MB pc100 SDRAM
20 GB ATA66 5400 (OS9) 2X60 ATA66 5400RPM (OSX RAID 0/ Striping)
Photoshop 6.0
OSX
Launch in Classic Mode (OS9) 21 seconds

the second(not mine):

G4 Apollo 800Mhz(newest model tower, entry level, not mine!)
1.5 GB PC133 SDRAM
40 Gb ATA(100?) 7200 RPM
OS9 12 seconds

I would expect performance to increase with Photoshop 7.0 in OSX (especially with the RAID setup) though I'll have to wait a bit longer now to find out.

All Macs come with IEEE1394A/USB 1.1 for peripherals. If you have any plans for digital video on your PC, I would purchase that option or install a card later. If you happen to purchase the Sigma SD-9 in the future, you will really appreciate the download performance.

Tom -

Your setup interests me.
20 GB ATA66 5400 (OS9) 2X60 ATA66 5400RPM (OSX RAID 0/ Striping)
I thought you needed at least four drives to optimize for really noticeable benefit for RAID; didn't thing twin drives would matter. Can you give some insight here?-- Ulysses

Hi Ulysses,

I'm sitting here trying to figure out the answers to your questions, not understanding much computer jargon. But I'll give it a go (sorry, it's a Mac):

Power Mac G4 Cube, 450MHz, RAM 256MB, SDRAM, PS Elements. I can't find any number on the specs indicating hard drive size and speed (i.e. no RPM numbers).

After restarting my computer, it took 15 seconds to get PSE up. Seems long compared to others, but just for fun I also timed it on my two-year-old iBook that was forced to use for the past month and a half -- took 80 seconds! You can imagine how happy I was last week to get my G4 back from repairs in the States and how much I absolutely didn't want to edit any photos with the iBook.
