a few days ago i noticed some black spots on my pictures at zoom f10. i tried to use "dust off" but with no success. it has gotten even worse. so i went to wolf camera and asked them how to face this issue. they gave me an authorized dealership, whom i called immediately. they wanted $190!!!! for an internal cleaning. i tried to find a repair guide online but again with no success so i just gave it a try to open the camera until i got to the sensor and tatahhhhh... it was easier than i thought. i try to make a guide how to do it. if anybody feels comfortable enough doing it by themselves please show me how to post pictures on this forum, i am new to this!!!

Just upload your photos to a website like Flickr or Smugmug and then right click on the image and then click on properties. A box will appear with the URL for the picture. Highlight it with your mouse, and right click on the highlighted address and select Copy. Now just paste the addresses in the main part of the message here on the forum. Use the Preview button to make sure it worked before posting. Dave

here's a guide (my personal) to remove the dust off the sensor of your SONY DSC-P200 without having to send in your camera and paying ridiculous amounts of money. i hope it helps. btw: during the whole procedure i had the battery as well as the memory stick in the camera. but u can remove it if u want. please let me know how it goes. GOOD LUCK!!!

so much! I will save it for future references! You never know when you might need to take my P200 apart. You sure are BRAVE. Thanks again. 8-D ybnormal aka Shayron

Great work! Both opening the thing up, and getting the pictures of the "patient" through the stages of the operation - and labelled so well.

Admirable stuff.

Dave, first of all thank you for showing me how to post the pictures. i have had my P200 for over a year and the dust problem just occurred recently. i am very happy that i was able to help. please share it with as many ppl as u wish. again, thank you for being the first to reply.
My p200 has never had a dust problem, and it was one of the very
first ones to be sold. I guess I was lucky. Thanks for taking the
time to post these pictures. I saved them in case anyone I know
needs to work on theirs. I hope that is OK with you. Dave

I have a different camera, the info you posted does not apply to me, but I wanted to thank you anyway, because you took your time and made an effort to make this info available to people.

Thanks very much for posting this step-wise protocol. Will definitely keep it in mind but I don't think I'll have the nerves to do it. I guess I will after the P200's 3 year warranty has expired. :)

On another note, I think the dust problem occurs during repeated zoom in & out. Mine has had dust problem TWICE and it's after repeated zooming. Maybe that's when the dust get in. I tried not to use too much zoom in/out in a short period of time now.

GT

...and welcome aboard the STF.

So many just arrive, do nought but pick the forum's collective brains over and over again, and eventually depart into the night without even a word of acknowledgement.

It's great to see someone instead make their very first posts such a marvellous, positive contribution to the forum.

Sincere thanks for your efforts; they're much appreciated!

Cheers,

Thank you for all of your nice and positive responses. I am very glad that you like the repair guide. It takes less than 20 minutes to clean that sensor. My P200 works perfectly (~ 300 shots after cleaning) and I myself am very happy about it. Man... those spots bothered me so much and now I am not afraid for those to come back since cleaning the P200 is very easy.

The only way possible I would also think for the dust to come in is truly as "The GT" said, through the lense gaps "after repeated zooming". I have had my camera for longer than a year and remember not using the zoom as much since I find it being rather slow and inaccurate. I recently used zoom more often and now realize, also after opening the camera, that it must be the lense gaps, which are not well sealed.

Anyway, thanks y'all for giving me such positive feedback.
Also, please share it with everybody who might need it.

Sincerely,

mamkho

Mamkho,

Thank you so much fur documenting and sharing the procedure.

How often do you think you will have to repeat it?

Did you take any measures to prevent the intrusion of dust in the future?

Do you think the procedure can be repeated several times without breaking wires or any other kind of wear?

Herbert,

I have done it once so far bc it bothered me a lot and I would rather safe the cleaning cost for something else than opening it for fun. I really don't think that the dust would come in more often than it would to a brand new camera, since I have not touched the lense unit at all. I use the camera and zoom very often, since I know I can solve the dust problem.

When you open the camera none of the wires or other wear have to be bend so I would not be afraid of breaking them. Everything goes with ease without having to apply any force. Just don't open the camera "as a hobby" and do only so when you really have a lot of dust. I find it pretty safe to do it (but that's just me).

Preventing dust from coming in, I think is maybe by less using the zoom. I see that many ppl face this dust issue. But there are also a lot of P200 users that don't have that problem. As I said, it never happend to me until recently, and I don't expect to have to open the camera for another year, but if I do, I will definitely let you guys know.

Thanks for the post !

I bought mine 14 months ago and first sent it in in December. They cleaned it for free and changed the lens barrel. Now it's dirty again. Good thing is that the warranty here is 2 years and they'll clean it again, just costs me EUR 5 for postage. Takes only 7 days.

Kudos for that service but thumbs down for having to send it in again ! Otherwise I love tihs camera.
