If money is not an object and you could get the 1D over the 10D what would be the reasons?

Well, it's a better camera for sports and is a heavy duty, professional body for two reasons.

29 lbs. of Canon stuff in a backpack that I carry everywhere. A closet full of things that are banned in Britain. A minivan and a Fender Stratocaster. A three bedroom ranch with three owls on an acre. An aversion to rumours. Also, absolutely no Canon 1200mm f/5.6. Yet.

Let's see (not necessarily in order of importance):

1. AF much much faster
2. 100% viewfinder
3. Controls more ergonomical
4. Weather sealing
5. 1/500th flash sync !!!
6. Ambient & flash exposure scales in viewfinder
7. 8fps
8. Firewire interface
9. 45 focus points, 7 of them being CROSS sensors
10. True spot meter
11. Better build quality
12. 1.3X mag factor
13. 1/16,000 max shutter speed
14. Extremely short viewfinder blackout during exposure

Sorry, that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

For studio/landscape/long exposure work the 10D's slightly higher resolution CMOS sensor make it - according to some - a slightly a better choice but for most else the 1D is better.

$1500 versus $3500

The question you have to ask yourself is - what do I need and what can I afford since money usually is an object.

Jim

Good luck with your decision - I choose 1D for several reasons - read Phil's reviews for the differences highlights.

A toy means something that isn't taken too seriously. I hardly think that any of the DSLR series as toys. Granted that some are better than the others, but it comes down to who is using it. Sure you will get better action and focusing from the 1D, but to call the others Toys? I don't think so.

My opinion... using your camera as a card reader is rediculous. Stand-alone readers are just too convenient and too inexpensive.

The only thing you need Firewire for is to connect your camera and program custom functions. However, if you're considering $3500 for a camera BODY then you owe it to yourself to spend another $50 and get a Firewire card for your PC.

Geting to my CPU is a royal PITA. It would be much easier if I can attach a card reader. Is that okay? If so, what is the BEST one. I used on once a Sandisk and then my card would not work in my camera after that. So I am leary of a card reader after that experience. Not sure if it was something I did or what. Any ideas here?

no matter which camera you do pick, a firewire reader is a must... along of course with a firewire card...

Come on Paul, you should know better than that. They are both cameras, and each has its strengths and weaknesses.

The 10D performs better on long exposures and looks considerably cleaner at high ISO's. It's definitely "not" a toy.

The 1D is built like a tank with better autofocus and much faster frame rate, much longer shutter life and has myriad other features and versatility found in professional body instruments.

I can appreciate the question.

I did chose the 10D. Although money IS an object for me, I did consider the 1D. For my type of shooting, though, the D60/10D is the better choice. Among the my considerations were:
  • increased resolution. I realize the 4MP is enough for plenty of applications, the 6.3MP is noticable to me above 8x12 or so.
  • size and weight. I like the feel of the 1D, but it is considerably heavier and bulkier than the 10D.
  • battery life? I can't say for sure, not having used a 1D for any length of time, but my expierience with my D30 and D60 are that the battery life is excellent and the batteries it uses are very easy to find and are reasonably priced.
  • AF performance. I know that the 1D is significantly better at this than the D30/D60/10D, I found the 10D to be significantly better than the D30/D60. I only had the opportunity to handle the 10D and 1D at PMA, but it was clear to me that this was true.
Since I had sold my D30 and bought a D60 just one week prior to PMA I was extremely frustrated until I talked to the fine people at Calumet, who took the camera back and put me on the list for the 10D. Whew! That was close. Serves me right, I suppose, buying a new camera a week before PMA! (in my defence, I thought the 1Ds was new enough that they wouldn't introduce a new model)

Good luck in your decision.

Phil
