This is not a new model, and was told to have been discontinued in certain region too. Over the years due to some reasons (happy with GX85, not much for me to upgrade to GX9 for extra 4Mp) I thought I would skip GX9 and look for possible upgrade to a GX10 :-) .

However, by a very unexpected chance, I added it a couple of weeks ago. :-) It was used, look like having been taking good care by its previous owner, at a decent price of US$410 body only with a free 3rd party grip:

After field testing, a few old questions on GX9 had came back. I wish to take this opportunity to give my thoughts/solutions:

1) Inaccurate AF: So far I am never disappointed by the AFS speed and accuracy on every Panny I owned. I use the focus-recompose style, therefore unless I had messed up on the recomposing, 99% of time I could nail the focus almost instantly. On GX9 I'd read it might have front or back focusing issue.

During my first field testing, under good shooting condition I had found many soft outputs, even a few totally failed. I had also found the AF couldn't lock on focus sometimes no matter how hard I tried (on flat, low contrast, mostly pure color: pick or red). Most of them were in portrait orientation.

I eventually found the following setting should be the culprit:

8a73601c7fbb48c8b5903ec8e9b6555a.jpg

Switching on of the above, the focus box (using a single box in smallest size at the center) in evf will disappear. Suspected it had made AF in portrait shooting position failed. Set it to OFF brings back the excellent AFS.

The failed (AF) shot on 1st field testing:

After the solution, happy again on 2nd field testing:

There was a recent thread on GX9 & 45-150. I hope the above might confirm 45-150 on GX9 should be perfectly alright.

2) Touch AF: On GX7, GX85 and G85 which support Touch PAD AF (use evf) and Touch AF (use LCD), could be disabled independently in the C Menu.

On GX9, while Touch Pad AF can be disabled in C Menu, Touch AF cannot. Some suggestion to disable the entire Touch LCD to avoid moving of focus box by mistake. However, this means losing of 5 soft fn keys and Q.Menu can no longer be operated by Touching. The C mode can't be selected through Touch too.

My solution is to make using the "Operation Lock" feature:

51d23e76b2f24146b85607fae18b9835.jpg

This feature must have to be assigned to a fn key (fn3 for me), and set it to:
  • Cursor: OFF
  • Touch Screen: ON
A hit to set Lock = ON, the Touch LCD (including Touch AF) would be disabled, but the Q.Menu can still be operated by Touch.

A 2nd hit to set Lock = OFF, Touch LCD is enabled again, so the soft fn keys etc would be used (be careful on Touch AF). When soft fn keys are no longer needed, hit the Lock to set it ON again.

IMHO this could be my approach on Touch LCD vs Touch AF on GX9.

3) AFC: I found the AF tracking of GX9 is far more effective than GX85. On a sequence of 10 shots in M Burst on a flying egret, I have 5~6 acceptable shots. It is hopeless on GX85.

4) Exposure behavior: As per Zebra = 105%, I found that under a flat scene I would expect GX9 to do very similar to GX85 on the exposure behavior.

From the histogram of testing shots, at 0ev metering:

633f2e2cdf5a48e7b6a6fd7c8dd37be8.jpg

When zebra first appeared (+2ev from the above):

209612942f4647fe91671c6c75df9677.jpg

+1/3ev after zebra appeared (total +2-1/3ev):

+2/3ev after zebra appeared (total +2-2/3ev), closest to ETTR:

+1ev after zebra appeared (total +3ev), highlight started overblown:

Therefore, it would be safe for me to +1/3~2/3ev to get optimal exposure for the area of zebra first appeared.

5) On IQ, except for the extra 4Mp, the SOOC PJG are very similar between GX85 and GX9. But I had noted that under Vivid mode the contrast of GX9 might be slightly higher. Still need more testing on the noise performance.

Finally, still a mysterious feature that I couldn't find a hint on it: "Extended Gain Setting". If anyone know what is it, please kindly let me know. :-)

Thank you for your reading.

I love my gx9. I've never had any issues with it.

I don't use any touch control (I have it turned off).

Lately I've been really enjoying the M.Zuiko 9-18 on it but it spent last weekend with me in Dallas with the M.Zuiko 17.

My gx85 has been converted to 590nm IR and doesn't seem to get out as much as it used to.

The AF issue mentioned, were using 12-32 & 45-150.

Never experience those AF difficulty so far in last 15 years shooting with Panny from G1, and both 12-32 & 45-150 are 8+ years with me too. Very often it was looking like shooting within a distance shorter than the min shooting distance but. in reality I was at least a few feet away from my target! Was very frustrated, a lemon might be, had once been in my mind!

After changed the setting, I am a happy man again.

If you have Touch disable, you would lose 5 soft fn keys, Q.Menu and Menu diving have to go through the cursors, that would be very inconvenience IMHO.

You got a free Leica badge too!

I think that should be OFF by default. Did you perform a reset after receiving it - you don't know what obscure settings the previous owner may have had!

I found with my GX80 (GX85) I would have to apply some noise reduction to most photos even in good conditions, which always frustrated me. With my GX9 that frustration was gone.

Under the same JPG profile (vivid) and same parameters, SOOC JPG from GX9 is slightly more contrast and saturate than GX85.

If shooting RAW or would edit in pp, the difference could be smaller.

My 2 cents.

Yes, I had reset the camera and set it up from scratch.

Upon my home testing, noise performance of both GX85 and GX9 should be very similar: ISO3200 SOOC JPG of them are acceptable to me. ISO6400 could be too much toy eyes :-) .

Replaced my GX85 with the 9 4 years ago. Used purchase.

AF accuracy: No issues what-so-ever. Other than being too close, can’t recall ever binning an image due to an AF miss. Most used lenses with GX9 are 12-35 and 14-140. Plenty of 12-32 and PL15 use as well.

AFC: Yes better, still far from my Sony RX100’s.

Settings: Touchscreen is turned off. Pinpoint AF off. AF Assist Lamp off.

JPEG’s: I shoot RAW but find the GX9 JPEG's noticeably better than the 85. Better contrast, color (either saturation or luminescence) is more to my liking. I would use GX9 JPEG's. GX85 JPEG shooting required Vivid with -1 Saturation and -1 Contrast.

Interesting. It seems that I could be the only one found the AF issue (vertical shooting).

Might I ask have you find anything on setting Vertical Setting to ON?

Sony (the beans, not the RX series) is not for me.

However, its AF tracking is closer to G85.
Settings: Touchscreen is turned off.
As I shoot for SOOC JPG, would use the 5 soft fn keys & Q.Menu often for the various features,.e g. HDR, Curve, Pict style, etc to switching of shutter mode for the effects, Touch Screen is very useful to me. Therefore using Lock is far ideal from option to switch Touch AF off.
Pinpoint AF off.
I don't use it too.
AF Assist Lamp off.
So it might affect low lighting AF?

Would this set vivid back to natural or std making it more flat than the vivid of GX9?

When I understand the rendering behavior of GX9, basically no more difference between GX85 and GX9. Because I would never follow 0ev metering, hence I set the lightness, contrast and saturation for my need to produce similar output.

I am just doing most of the work on shooting vs editing them to similar result in pp.

Following some subsequent shooting, reminded me the usefulness of the tiltable evf. Love the design on GX7, happy to have it back :-) .
