GH3 launch date, specs?

Yup, the GH2 is THE movie camera with (compared to recent, competing models) so-so stills quality and a lot of decent (as long as you don't need zoom; or image stabilization at 24 mm equiv.) lens, at least compared to the NEX and the Nikon 1 series. The A77 is exactly the opposite: great photos, so-so video (and also great lens, particularly the 16-50).

Well the GH is now well know for "the hybrid camera", it is heading toward different direction and market than A77 I am afraid.

Confirmed that 'flagship' for both stills as well as video is now the priority. Also confirmed that at last review schedule was still March.

The original schedule for the GH2 successor was March 2012. I see reports of a later date but I do not know if this is guessing or the people have newer real information.

The big news is that the status as a 'flagship' is far more prominent than before. The GH project started as a movie/still camera project but has evolved into 'the flagship' and is now being regarded as more significant.

As for specs, they have some really significant technology in development, but it is more a case of what is solid by the cut off date then the camera being delayed to wait for the tech to be ready.

I say GH2 successor as their was even talk at some stage of a new name, but I think that lost momentum.

If it's announced in March 2012, and the technology is really "significant," then you'll be lucky to get your hands on one by next year at this time.

The A77 is exactly the opposite: great photos, so-so video (and also great lens, particularly the 16-50).

I don't find the GH2 stills particularly shabby. But my reason for leaving Sony and selling my Sony lenses was the lenses : They are large compared to the equivalent m4/3 lenses. I can carry my GH2 and several lenses all day; with an A55 I had to make compromises if out and about for a day.

Exactly, those of us who've had GH1 and GH2 know how long they hold out! GH3, 12 months from now, no sooner in your hand than that. Prioriy is fast zoom glass, if they deliver them and they are good by March I will be very very happy ;-)

Panasonic recently mentioned that this is when the next big announcement will be. Unless this is new camera line then I suspect this is when the GH3 will be announced.

The viewfinder should be the same as you find in the GH1 you already have, as well as in the G1, G2, G3; it is a high quality EVF.

Is this definitely the case? That the GX1's optional EVF is as big, and as high resolution, as the GH1's? If so, I'm definitely getting one...

Thanks - I've checked and, allowing for the fact that the GH2's horizontal field of view is a little wider, the resolution does appear the same, though I'm not sure yet that the GX1's EVF image is as big as the GH2's (though it would seem possible that it is).

If so, seems to me an attractive prospect. My plan is to get the GX1 body with 12-35 and 35-100 when they become available and possibly some or all of the 12mm, 25mm and either the Zuiko or Leica 45mm fixed lenses (the latter depending on how important macro is to me) for when compactness matters more than flexibility.

I have wondered how 'at last review the project is on track the original March plan' can be reconciled with the quote from the article 'Photokina 2012 would be very important for Panasonic'. Considering the increased prominence the messages all indicate about the GH successor... how do these fit?

Will they complete the GH in time for March then wait six months to announce? (unlikely I would think)
Will they reschedule the project?

Will the announce in March and then have product for hands on and perhaps even reviews in hand for Sept?

The GH2 is the only G series EVF that is slightly larger....The GH2 is unique with 1,530K dots, 1.42/.71x magnification when compared to a full frame 35mm camera and 50mm lens at infinity, vs the 1,440K dots, 1.40/.70x magnification specs of the LVF2, G1*, G2, G3, GH1 (assuming you trust Panasonic and dpreview specs), all measured from a consistent 17.5 mm eyepoint.

The G1 EVF seems to have the same specs...I cannot confirm the eyepoint spec with Panasonic as G1 pages seem to have been taken down, and dpreview shows a 14 mm eyepoint which is probably an error since Panasonic shows 17.5 mm in its web pages for every other G series built-in EVFs, as well as the EVF's in the lower spec'd G10 and LVF1...

So you are correct, the GH2 EVF image slightly is larger than the LVF2 and other G series EVF's, and I understand that this is to give you a larger 16:9 viewfinder image, not just a 4:3 viewfinder image cropped to 16:9.

The only totally honest and accurate answer you're going to get is: We don't know. And if we do, we can't say.

The simple truth is that anyone who knows what is planned for the GH3, and when, is under an NDA, and can't / won't talk about what they know. Anyone who answers your questions is simply speculating, and doesn't know, because if they did they wouldn't be talking about it.

We don't even know if there will be a GH3. We all assume there will be, but it's certainly possible Panasonic could end the GH line or replace it with something different. We all certainly believe there will be a GH3, but none of us really know.

Either you've never used a GH2, and never paid any attention to the many GH2 stills posted here, or you're a troll. The GH2 stills output, especially shooting raw, is absolutely stellar. If you can't produce publication or exhibition quality prints (at reasonable sizes) with a GH2 the problem lies with what's behind the viewfinder, not what's underneath it.
