G7 Exposure lock

Exposure Lock. Do i understand the manual correct.

Point the camera where you want to lock the exposure. Press the shutter half and lock the exposure. Than keep the shutter half pressed and composition you photo, so point your camera on your subject. At last make the photo.
Is this how it works or can i release the shutter when i locked the exposure ?

As far as I can tell,

Page 64: Focus Lock means you point to the thing you want to lock on, half press the shutter, then aim at what you want to photo. The camera does not re-focus, provided you keep the buton half way.

AF lock, once focused on the thing you want to lock on to, half press the shutter, then release; press the MF button and the manual focus will start, using the last focal length, i.e. the thing you just pointed the camera. You can then re-compose the shot and shoot using the focal length selected.

Press MF again to go back to auto focus

Pressing the shutter halfway locks exposure AND focus. If you want to lock exposure only, in P, Tv or Av modes, you can press the AE lock button, and it will lock in the exposure, showing a horizontal scale. By turning the wheel, you can adjust the shutter/aperture combos the G7 knows will work.

It is located on the upper right corner on the back (it has an asterisk ( ) and a mic next to it). It's quite handy.

I should add that the flash must be disabled to enable the exposure 'combo' adjustment. If the flash is enabled (either 'on' or 'auto'), it will do a test fire for exposure and allow no adjustment.

But when i locked the exposure only, can i release the shutter button and point my camera on something else and than half press the shutter to focus on this new object and it use the locked exposure ?

I wanna understand this and try this with my camera but yesterday i didn't see any difference. How can i test this.

After you lock the exposure then you can release the shutter button, recompose, chose the right combination then focus and shoot.

Point the camera to the desired 'exposure area', press & release the AE Lock button to lock exposure (no need to press shutter at this time...remember, this is exposure lock only). You then point the camera in the desired direction, compose & press the shutter halfway to focus the desired scene, take the shot.

Now it's more clear to me. I just point the camera to the desired area and than only press the AE lock button.

Can someone give me an example of a situation when this is usefull ?

I high contrast images when you want to have in focus something that is in shadow in bright sunlight and you don't want the sky to be gray when it's blue.

Give this a try:

1) With lens cap off, camera powered on and in P mode (make sure the flash is set to 'off'), press the AEL button once and release it. You have just locked your exposure.

(remember, the AEL button is located in top right corner with asterisk ( ) and mic)

What happens? A 'meter' appears horizontally across the bottom, right? OK:

2) Now, the meter you see is comprised of aperture & shutter combinations (aperture on top row, shutter on the bottom). Turn the wheel around the rocker button. See the values change? As you turn the wheel, both values change in order to maintain the correct shutter/aperture relationship.

So, all you're really doing to obtain exposure lock is (after pointing the camera in the desired direction) pressing one button. That's it, exposure lock obtained.

Does this simplify things?

No i don't have a camera........like everybody else here on this forum. Everybody is just asking without having a camera........lol....thnx.
