G2 LCD Hinge

I have had my G2 for a little over two months, and really love it. Last night, I noticed that the curved plastic covering the LCD hinge is starting to crack! I haven't dropped it or mishandled it any way. I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this and, if so, what you did about it. I called Canon Support and they recommended I send it in for repair. My question is: Is this a cosmetic piece of plastic to hide the hinge and the cracking in no way impedes the functionality of the LCD? It looks like the piece could easily be replaced by unscrewing two little screws - am I right, or will those screws unhinge the whole LCD unit. If the answer is the former, can I get Canon to simply send me the piece and I can replace it myself. I would rather not send it to Canon Repair if I can help it, especially for a piece of plastic I possibly can replace myself!

I have taken more than 700, but I bet you have taken more good (usable) pictures than I have - I am a beginner, but I think I am improving as I learn more about the camera!! : )

I went to Canoga Camera to buy a 420 and showed them the cracking on the hinge. The guy said I would probably have to send it in for repair! Darn, I was hoping I wouldn't have to do that!!

My LCD Hinge is also craking!!!

I've been using G2 since november, and I have taken almost 3000 photos.

I agree with you, I' ve waited 1 month to have my g2 (suplying problems).

I don't know if Canon has a solution to this.

Until the cracking problem, I thought G2 was the best digital camera ever made.

I think you are remembering my post (this very one). I have already had the plastic on the hinge replaced by Canon. It took several weeks, and it was fixed. However, I called later to ask them to check the now famous hairline crack, and obviously this later request never made it to the technician because it is still there.

In a way, I am so sorry I ever posted the picture of my silly little crack!! I guess I wanted to know if it WAS just cosmetic, but I started this whole thing and now every other thread is about this hopefully minor defect. Perhaps I was being too picky in the first place, but I can assure you I don't need a magnifying glass to see it even though it is small.

I love my camera - I want to learn more about photography and I really feel that the G2 is a great camera for me and many other levels of photographers!!! I want to post more of my pictures, but most people ignore them anyway, except for the notorious crack picture!!!

How do you count how many pics you've taken with your G2????

to see it even though it is small.

Thanks Leezah, if you hadn't wroten your post I would have thought that I was the only one with the hinge lcd crack.

I love G2 also, I'm going to take my G2 to repair my lcd hinge crack.

But I don't know if I'm going to be able to live without G2 for several weeks :-(

In fact, what happens if G2, starts to crack elsewhere?

Well, the camera does number them. I have my camera set to not restart numbering.
