G2 & Extended Warranty

Well, after 3 attempts I finally got a totally acceptable G2, price-matched at Jessops. Now, although I normally avoid extended warranties like the plague, I am tempted by Jessop's offer. Essentially, it's £129 for two years beyond the manufacturer's warranty and the full three years against accidental damage. This means that if, say, the G2 exploded after two years and it was unrepairable, then it may provide a reasonably cheap way of getting an upgrade or of course a new G2 - the policy is new for old. But, I also feel that £129 would cover quite a bit of repair work should it go wrong in the future. Does anybody know, for example, how much Canon charges to map out bad pixels? Just how far would £129 go? What are your views with regards extended warranties for digital cameras? As I said, I'm not keen on them, but am sort of tempted. Thanks in advance.

Just had to shell out £109.27 plus postage to Casio to get broken pin fixed that slots into the compact flash card due to sandisk card slightly off line and over enthusiastic pushing it in, with hind sight I should have gone for the jessops warranty as there are still plenty more things that can go wrong. OK my machine a Casio and just over a year before it goes wrong but suspect Canon repair costs even higher?
May be worth a call to Canon tech support and ask for typical repair costs.

thanks for this and yeh, I think that I will ring Canon as you suggested. After all, £129 isn't a fortune and I guess that it could save quite a bit in the long run, especially if your Casio experience is anything to go by!

I would be very sure that accidental damage is covered before i would accept this. I just recently got burned by Digital dealz on extended warranty. I was buying my G2 and got the push for extended warranty and when i was told that accidental damage was included i bit.BIG MISTAKE!I asked that if i dropped the camera and broke it would it be covered and was told absolutely but when the warranty card arrived it specifically said accidental damage not covered. I called them and was told that an addendum to cover accidental damage was in mail. BIG LIE! Has never arrived.Trying to get covered through AMEX with their Buyers assurance plan where if not satisfied and company will not take back Amex will cover cost.However Digital Dealz lumped all in one amount and will not give me itemized list. If I had only discovered this forum and advoice before buying.This is a very immorally run business -this DIGITALDEALZ

Don't be ripped off by Jessops. Having just gone to Canon's site to register my G2, I noticed that they too offer a 3 year extended warranty for £39.95 inc vat.

OK, so it doesn't cover accidental damage like Jessops, but for around £30 a year you can get insurance to cover it for theft & accidental damage.

I was originally going to get breakdown insurance 11 months down the line for 4yrs at £200. Note that if you insured the G2 after the warranty period, only 1yrs worth of breakdown insurance would be allowed at £100 a go.

Obviously, I'm going for Canon's 3 Year Extended Warranty + a separate Theft/Accidental damage insurance. I think its the best move you can make.

There are a lot of thing's that can fail in a digital. That's why I bought the extended warranty offered by Henry's (serviced through Canon). The warranty is a fix or replace warranty - so if Canon can't fix it, I'll get a new (or likely re-furbished) G2. Of course, ideally, Canon wouldn't have stock of the old camera's and I'd get a G3 (or G4 - whatever.... ;-) ) The other big factor in my decision is that this particular warranty is transferable. So if I ever decide to sell my G2, I can sell it with warranty out to 2004, which should make it a little more attractive for potential buyers.

I would like to ask a similar question to all of you, since you are the experts.

I have already ordered a Canon G2 camera for $634 which i think it is a fair price. I am interested in getting a warranty for my camera. So what I would like to know is where to go in the USA and what I should ask to get a warranty for my G2. I want fully accidental damage for X years.Is it possible to get warranty from anywhere or do I have to speak with the company I bought the camera from ? As you have previously said I want to drop it down and the warranty people to replace it !!

Breakdown insurance with domestic & general. If you ensure with them towards the end of your warranty, i.e. the 11th month. Then you can insure your G2 for £198 for max of 4 years which covers accidental damage too. You have to insure within the warranty period, otherwise you can only insure for a maximum of 1 year at £100. Obviously, they allow you to pay in 10/12 installments which makes it a lot easier to pay. Visit http://www.domgen.com and play with purchase dates, i.e. bought it now, 11 months ago, and 13 months ago, and look at the different quotes & options you get.

To cover now for accidental damage, add it to your existing personal possessions/all risks policy or take one out. Its then covered for theft & accidental damage. That takes care of accidental damage for the first year during the warranty period. Costs around £30 (depends where you live I expect).

Yeah, I type in canon, camera, price (£542), date I bought it (last week) etc,. and up pops the quote of £79 for four years! And that, like you said, covers accidental damage. Actually, it appears that you can buy it now and the cover doesn't start until Canon's year is up. Think I'll ring them tomorrow and get some cover! Thanks again.

Oops! Just realised my mistake. £79 was for a film camera!!! £188 for a digital. Still, for 4 years, that's less than a pound a week and still seems like a good deal and certainly better than Jessops.

Yeh, but its probably wise to get it nearer the end of the warranty period, ie with the last month or so, because then you have 5 yrs of cover for breakdown. You can get accidental damage for this year through standard personal possessions insurance, plus it covers theft, an added bonus!
