Looking for some real world experience on comparative speeds. I am thinking of setting up an FTP server if I would get significantly faster uploads. I currently upload to Canon or Google. (My download speed for a server via wifi is about 600Mbps, so I think the bottleneck would be the camera).

Thanks for any solid info.

It can be fast, but it depends upon where you set up your ftp server and the bandwidth they offer on upload speeds and whether the speeds they offer are consistent on the upload.

For the most part, if you are transferring jpgs, it can be almost instant if you are selecting which images you want to send, have a robust connection and good upload pipeline to the server. If you are sending everything and heavy on the shutter it can back up the queue which does seem to hang the cameras up from time to time.

I have run into issues with some ftp servers that seem to throttle the upload speed sometimes. It will be fast until suddenly it's not. But that phenomenon is not unique to ftp servers, that seems to be the entire internet from time to time.

Ultimately you should see similar speeds if you are sending to a robust ftp server.
