I've got a 350XT, as well as an S400, and the folder numbers are always similar. Generally, they're in the 800's. When copying the pics to the computer, it's a mess when you've got similarliy named folders. It should be said that I occassionally swap the CF cards from one camera to another.

I looked into the file number reset option in the Xt's menu, but I seem to remember that would'nt have done the trick.

I'm happy to look stupid, if it means getting an answer. Thanks for your help.

swapping cards between Canon cameras make a camera pick up the count from the other camera in an attempt to prevent conflicting filenames (files of the same name).

the folder structure is probably the same on both cameras, because they follow certain guidelines (standards, if you will).

this will only cause trouble, because it will restart from 0 on each use, creating conflicting filenames and folder names.

what you need is a downloader software that will recognize the camera, rename the files on download according to the scheme you devised for it. for instance you can have something like:

c:\download folder\camera type\event name - sequntial number.jpg,

or whatever suits you. breeze systems downloader pro is a great such tool, but it is not free.

i should have added that when using such a downloader, you do not care about the file/folder structure on the card, the downloader software abstracts it away from you, so you don't even have to bother with it. what you get with such software is files on your hard disk in the arrangement you desire, all with a great level of automation (and hence a low level of pain and suffering).

Thanks.

I've just been dragging and dropping, but it appears a little more complicated than that.
