Finally getting to an NX1

I have been a Samsung afficionado for a long time. Had several different models. Sold them all except for my NX Mini to move to Fuji. Bought several Fujis, sold a few and and then found a good deal on Galaxy NX. Fell in love again and bought an additional NX500.

I was never too interested in an NX1 since I use a Clearfinder on my NX500 that serves beautifully as a viewfinder, but always had an eye out for an 16-50 S.

And there it was on ebay, alongside an NX1 and an 18-200 for Buy it now for €804.

Camera and lenses arrived, all in near mint to to mint condition.

Unfortunately the 18-200 is decentered at 16mm, so I'm working out some compensation with the seller.

Like I said, I was never too interested in the NX1 and always thought of it as a bulky NX500. How wrong I was. It's a beautiful machine and the viewfinder rivals the one on my Fuji X-H1, a little smaller but with better colors. I thought my Panasonic G9 and Fuji X-H1 felt great in my hand, but the NX1 feels incredible. The shutter sound is beautiful. I was initially going to sell the NX1 to keep the 16-50 S, but no chance.

Looking forward to using this beauty and getting to know it better! Jpeg IQ may not fully match my X-H1 jpegs straight out of camera but I still need to experiment with settings. I do love the Samsung colors as always.

I have a full frame kit but the NX1 and S lenses are my go to for most things and the NX500 with 16-50 PZ and 50-200 for a super light kit.

Is it the 16-50 that's decentered at 16 or the 18-200 at 18mm? The 18-200 can't be at 16. If it's the 18-200, I wouldn't worry about it. For the price you paid, you could toss it in the trash and still have a good deal. The 18-200 is optically the worst lens they made. It does focus quickly and quietly but just isn't that good optically. I rarely use mine, choosing the 50-200 for the tele since it's better.

Sorry my bad. Yes, it's the 18-200 that's decentered not the 16-50 S.

I had a copy of the 18-200 previously and I actually quite liked it. Used it on my NX Mini with adapter which almost took it to 600mm.

No problems with blurry edges since the 1 inch sensor only uses the middle portion.

I did not use it enough though. For zoom photography I prefer my G9.

wpstl,
Agree 100%, the 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 ED OIS Movie Pro is optically poor for still photography because the lens features are optimized for creating movie content.

Siralgovi,

Congratulations loving your NX1! I too have the NX1 and the NX500 and adding the NX1 to your arsenal nicely adds that EVF, bigger hand-grip ergonomics for heavy lenses, and its full sensor video. Owning both bodies greatly increases your use-cases.

Best regards to all

As usual I agree with Lawrence. I did own the 18-200mm for a bit and whilst it's obviously the most versatile, it's just not that good for photography. If you can afford it the 50-150mm is far far superior.

Having said that the 18-200mm.is a good option for video as the focus is good and quiet.

Had a chance to play around with my NX1 now. I own the 16-50 S, 16, 20, 30, 45, 16-50PZ and 18-200 as well as a Walimex 8mm Fisheye.

The pancake lenses are outstanding and I have read from pixel peepers the the 30 and 45 may outclass the 16-50 S at their given focal length. I love my pancakes, but there's something about the 16-50 S. Maybe the 30 and 45 beat it when pixel peeped, but the 16-50 S has a 3 D thing or a clarity that's astonishing. Not sure how to describe it, but the 16-50 S is blowing my mind. I actually prefer it's output over that of my Fuji X-H1 with the 14mm 2.8. The clarity of the 16-50 S is amaxing to me. Very very happy.

I have the pancakes to use with my NX500 when traveling light but with the NX1 it's always the 2 S lenses. The 16-50 S is indeed amazing.

Hello Siralgovia, congrats for your new NX1.

I'm still using the same camera, and still find the ergonomics, lens and image quality to be excellent.

Also lovely to see all NX fans here in (re-born, or never-died) Dpreview discussing about Samsung Mirrorless cameras. Probably the farthest corner of Dpreview forums here, but definitely the best, lol.

Weird that my smartphone has so good screen that all the photos I take with it look soo good immediately! The screen of NX1 looks so out-of-date compared, so I'm always afraid the images will look crappy at my big screen, too. No such thing till today, all the images are still far better than from any smartphone I've seen.

Also agree on how sweet are the 16-50S and 30/45mm primes.

How much money should I offer to Samsung to re-open the NX camera division again? I know it is just a dream though. Thankful the NX1 is so strong almost nine years later. It was announced late 2014 and was on sale 2015-16-17. And it still outperforms some of the latest aps-c cameras out there. Think about it. Fabulous.

Wishing the best shots for all NX users around. So happy Dpreview survived and NX is still so alive.

I too have just joined the NX1 bandwagon and am similarly impressed with it in the first minutes of using it. Feels fantastic in the hand, and the color production is amazing. Got it with a 20 mm wide and expecting soon a 50 - 200 though I will search for others. Hope to gain more information and advice from DPR users here.

Welcome to the Bandwagon!

Something to save up for. Thanks for the tip.

Enjoy your NX 1.

My NX kit has kept my gear acquisition syndrome in check!
