Well it was fun having the G2 but it had to go..... I bought this camera a few weeks ago and to be honest I was not to impressed I had tested the S30,S40 and the Black G2 but I cannot justify the cost difference between the s30 and the G2 actually to be honest the picture quality between the too seem almost the same. I know the critics out there will argue over this one but with almost $700 Canadian difference between them the Cons outway the Pros

What with cracking problems on the G2, firmware updates, and countless other problems I am sorry but it had to go.

I did settle for the s30, case , 1gig Microdrive , Datavault , Paper and 2 new printer inks I think this was the way for me to.....as it was the same cost well almost I had change

Thanks for all the help and advice that people gave on this forum you have all been a great help.

Thanks Guys

Mark, glad you are happy with your S30 and extra supplies etc. As for me I could never give up the xtra pixels, hot shoe and tilt/swivel of the G2. They just make the G2 a whole lot more useful for me.

that would go double for me too. from what i've seen, the s30 is smaller and more convient - but has some real tricky focusing issues. i've updated my camera about 6 times, had no problems at all. i doubt there's anything wrong with the firmware, provided that they followed the instructions perfectly. - going down to the s30--- i dunno. seems kind of a waste. but to each is own i guess. the g2 is far more flexible - though be it a little hard to hold onto....

Tricky focusing issues for S30 ? I found none so far other than the usual fail to focus at low light and/or on area lack of contrast which I believe applies to all powershot as far as I read here.

The three things you list are exactly the reason why I could never make the switch. Especially, especially, especially the HOT SHOE!

Even with those things I can't seem to get used to not having the range you get with interchangeable lenses. Therefore, a D60 is in my very near future.

Glad you are happy Jerry.
I have the G2 and wouldn't trade it.

What happened to your G2 did you sell it or return it to the store. If so is the store going to sell it to another customer as New??? Just wondering

"Most" people do not have any problem with their G2s, much less "countless problems". I think you've done too much reading of discussion groups and not enough picture taking.

The S30 will have firmware updates too. They are a good thing.

The biggest plus for the G2 - flash hotshoe. There is no comparison of shots between bounce-flash and the built-in flash. But then if you never tried it...

Have fun with the S30!!!

Just a thought about the absence of a shoe on the S30/40. I have a slave digiflash which satisfies my infrequent need for a higher flash output. I would have appreciated a dummy shoe on my S40 negating the need for a bracket although sometimes as the situation dictates, I just hold it. Works well. Portability was my priority experienced from my use of film cameras. The portibility of the S40 has proven to be a suitable choice for me.

I had the same problem choosing b\w the two but like CRL those things he me mentioned on the G2 were what made me decide to go with the g2, I will add the remote to the list and add on lenses. The picture quality i think is the same in good light but on low light there is a difference and with AMEX $549 compared to AMEX 399 the price difference is minimal considering i might end up buying a second battery for the S30.

The size difference not really an issue since the S30 is not really pocketable and probably be in a small camera bag that you might need to carry anyhow.

Still the S30 is a good camera if you don't mind having the G2 additional features.

The G2's extra cost is not due to any diffrences in picture quality, but rather differences in features and capabilities offered by the two cameras. The G2 can simply do moer than the S-series models.

If you have no need for thewse extra features, then by all means you should have bought the cheaper model in the first place, and depending on your own personal skills and capabilities, perhaps you might have been best served by an even cheaper model.

1. cracking problems - minor, purely cosmetic issue, limited to some cameras and addressed by Canon's warranty. A nuisance, but a minor one.

2. firmware updates - hardly a problem, as this is actually a feature. The fact that these cameras accept firmware updates emans that it can be upgraded, for free, if and when Canon releases updates. The only update they have is to add direct support for some of their newer printers. How is this a problem?

3. What "countless other problems" are you referring to?

That's nice, but don't make it sound as if the G2 is some sort of rip-off. It is one of the most popular and highly rated digital cameras in its class, and it has many uniwue features and capabilities which the S30 lacks, including a rotating LCD, a much longer life battery, longer shutter speeds for low-light photography, etc. The S30's only advantages are small size and lower cost.

With e-ttl and flash zoom head?

Less expensive is good, "cheaper" pictures are not!

The main problem there is that you are still flashing the built-in flash directly into the subject's eyes - red-eye city. Even without bouncing, a 420EX moves the flash 6 or so inches from the lens, reducing the occurence of red-eye.

What is a DataVault?
