I pre-ordered the Sony 28-70 f/2 lens and will most likely need a new filter as i don't have an 86mm.

Was thinking if getting a variable ND filter. I did see this one, B+W 95mm XS-Pro Digital Vario ND with Multi-Resistant Nano Coating.

Any other recommendations?

See if a square filter system might be an option.
I think I would prefer a filter that screws on.
86 mm is a non standard size so in that case it would take some research to see if there is a step up ring 86 mm - 95 mm

So far as variable ND

Polapro is an option for vari ND

For solid ND I like Breakthrough Technology filters I use and like as well.

B&W, Hoya, Heliopan, Tiffen HT line it decent.

Variable ND filters, even expensive ones, can get the dreaded dark X at wide angles. Whether one will get you the results you want (or ruin them) depends on what you're shooting and how.

Wondering if a 95mm on a step up ring would fit under the hood??

Definitely something to watch for. I wonder how many people use a variable on their 24-70 lens and have this issue.

Honestly don’t know

I have researched this a bit more. Ya, 86mm is a non standard so not so easy to find filters so a new plan has been adopted.

Would you prefer to use a 100mm square system or use the Nisi 95mm ND kit with a NiSi SWIFT 86-95mm System Adaptor Ring.

Thoughts ?

I was never really happy to use sheet filters, because a lens hood can longer be used which might be critical under certain light condiditions.
I bought a modular hood for my Cokin P system (only up to 82mm), but never really used it due to the added bulk.

For your purpose (86mm) you would need their Z or the even larger X-Pro system holder.

Haida Nanopro Magnetic series is pretty good.

I have used them quite a bit over the last one year... magnetic snapping makes it very easy... I think they have 95mm variant also...

The following photos are taken with Haida CPL + ND filters, I have not noticed any degradation of color or sharpness...

1. 2. 3. 4.
Good luck :)

Will you want to use a hood? Would a 95mm screw in hood be ok? How frequently will the nd be used?

Since the original post 86mm filters have started to become more available. This NiSi is a fine filter but pricey. https://nisiopticsusa.com/product/n...cPjc_DTgNfsN2hc-CKsbOqjkrjagXT68QU2LEDjb9ledc
