Hello all,

I'm a new owner of a F30 and am experiencing read errors when browsing through my pictures on camera. I have a 1gb olympus type h memory card. Also, when I download pictures using the finepixviewer software (v5.2) I get an error when trying to download the same pictures that I get a read error with on the camera. There are many pictures past the errored ones and I'd like to download them, but the software aborts once the error occurs.

Are there any other programs that I can download the pictures with besides the fuji software, or can I manually delete the pictures manually somehow through the usb connection? There are only about 10 that give errors and I don't care much about them.

I'm using win2k and the camera does not show up in explorer to manually browse.

Thanks for your help!

Sorry, I misunderstood your question. I always use a card reader, so it didn't occur to me that you were uploading from the camera. Thought you were referring to the software.

If your only looking at them on the camera and having problems you should get what you can off and format the card and start over, if there supper important to you, get some recover software and get them off then reformat the card. The file systems has gotten messed up maybe you tried to errase or upload from the computer or something it didnt like.

Search the web or someone here might be able to reccomend some recovery software.

I just hook the camera up to windows XP and open explore and find the camera directory and select them all and copy them all to a directory on my hard drive. Windows will try to give you a pop up box after you turn your camera on, close it, dont use it. You will have to uninstall the Fuji Software to do this, because when the Fuji software is there, it always graps the job.

Should be the same in 2K as I described above.

When trying to view some pictures in the F30 I got a read error. I was quite alarmed my this as I have never experienced this with my Canon S2 and my very old Fuji A303 which though slow never gave any problems and took pretty decent photos. I'm using a 1 Gb M xD card as recommended by the manual. I formatted the card when the read error occured and so far it hasn't happened. I ordered this camera from B&H NY and had it shipped to Trinidad, W.I. Does the F30 need a firmware update to solve this problem?

I dont think so............I dont have this problem and I have the same gear. These problems happen all the time with card readers, I dont hear one was in the mix here or with you, however, even moving or erasing pics using your computer software to manipulate the images on your camera, can sometimes, cause the memory card to get corrupt, in which case a reformt will fix it.

I have found the cleanest way, the most problem free method from three fuji cameras is to; hook the camera up to the computer, copy the images from your computer using the computer software, to your hard drive, disconect the camera and then use the camer to perform a bulk erase of the images. I have never had a problem with this procedure.

I use a 1 gig Oly XD card.........no problems, one format when I first installed it and never again, 7000 images on my F11, 700 on the F30, no problems.

I was reviewing the photos in the camera and not via the computer. When I pressed the playback button I immediately got a read error and no photos could be viewed. I had only used the camera a couple of times when this occured, I guess the card needed a format.

Again, I just found this alarming as this had never happened with the S2 and A303 when reviewing photos in the camera.

Thanks for your help as in Trinidad there virtually no one who services digicams even though they're gaining in popularity.

I had the exact same problem on F10 and Olympus type H 1 Gig card. I use badcopy to recover most of the pictures but then the card unformatable afterward.

Is 3rd party card reader involved?

Well, a Windows XP upgrade would probably be your best bet, as it has built in support for PTP, the Picture Transfer Protocol that the F30 uses instead of the USB Mass Storage protocol that was used by previous Fxx cameras.

But ... assuming you don't want to do that, you can get the Still Image software from Microsoft to add all this stuff to Windows 2000. It is here:
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/stillimage/stillimg-connect.mspx

Now, I have no idea if that works, since I use Windows XP with my D70s and the PTP (it supports both, but PTP has a lot of features over and above file transfer.)

When you connect the camera and switch it on, it will appear in the Exporer under cameras and scanners. It will act like a hard drive though, so you can just drag your photos onto your hard disk.

I would chuck the Fuji software asap.

YMMV ... no warranty and all that.

Thanks everyone for your help. I have a windows XP desktop at my disposal so I decided to use it to grab the uncorrupted pictures. I had about 370 on the camera; 10 were bad and couldn't be copied. I didn't realize there was a difference between win2k and XP in terms of being able to browse the camera through explorer.

I think my problems might have stemmed from never explicitly formatting the xd card at first. I didn't do this because the camera just started recording images without formatting, so I figured it had done a formatting automatically when I inserted the card the first time.

After I copied my pictures to the XP system, I formatted the card through the camera. Hopefully that will be the end of my read and write errors. I really appreciate everyone's input.

See my response to original post. I had the same problem and looks like a defective xD card. This is bad as I went thru dozen of CF and SD even some no-name brand without a single issue. In my case, a 3rd party card reader was involved but once I saw the "read error" and recovered the files by Badcopy, the card is dead and no longer formatable.

Wonder when will Fuji and Olympus (and Sony) finally learn and stop creating proprietary format... Fuji is automatic out of my watch-list for so long until they introduced the F10.

I agree with you High Pockets. My first impression after reading your initial post was that you didn't format the card initially in camera. This is a must with all memory cards.

Glad you got it sorted out with XP. I'll bet the card works fine now.

Highpockets,

You need to install the USB drivers that came on the Fuji CD with your camera. Ran into the same problem until I did so. Then you should be able to view the contents of the card dirrectly through the camera when the USB cable is plugged in.

Best Wishes,

I've been experiencing a similar problem since getting my F30 and xD card. I hook up my camera via USB to my mac and import pictures into iPhoto. Every once in a while I get an error that a picture couldn't be imported. It only happens to maybe 1 out of 100 pictures, but it's very annoying.
