Hahahaaa..

Now that I got your attention..

..this post isn't about Purple Fringes..

..but purple orchids..

..with purple fringes..

..that are supposed to be there.

:-)

Of course, AAK will still probably stop by and find some PF in these images, but he's allowed.

Haven't posted in awhile, so hello to all.

I'm posting some results from a test with the R1 VCL-DEH17R 1.7X TELE this morning. I just got this yesterday late afternoon along with the R1 VCL-DEH08R off eBAY, as the prices had dropped to the point I thought I'd better buy them now incase they completely disappear from the shelves now that the R1 is pretty much history.

Now I won't pretend to compare my tests with AAK's White Papers, but the first images I see with them are revealing and wanted to share.

I have to admit..Sony has not let us down on these converters for the R1. The quality is outstanding, their sharpness is equal to the zoom lens and when it comes to image quality..there is nothing better I've ever seen on any camera system.

Except other Sony's with their matching converters, right..?..of course..!!

So this is a quick study of the Tele converter. I'll do the W/A converter in my next post.

Here's the technical stuff..

Sony 1.7X tele converter
ISO 160
F11/ 180th sec
matrix metering
aperture priority
standard color mode
tripod
delayed timer
available light
+ - 0.0 compensation

Distance from lens to subject is about 5 ft. To give you some scale, the diameter of the blossoms is about 8 inches on the diagonal from flower petal tip to flower petal tip.

On the large size, but full of details. Grew them myself. And Miracle Grow.

And a last note for the purists: these are all straight from the camera..no editing apart from resizing where noted. No curves, no color correction, no tweaks, no sharpening.

Nada.

This first pic is resized to fit your screens from a 10MP image to 830 x 1000 and is cropped just a bit top and bottom.

This one is a 100 % crop of the original 10MP image showing the flower on the upper right..

Next, I went ahead and thought I'd try the digital precision zoom on the image with the tele-converter to see how that holds up..since the tightest I could get was 205mm with the tele-converter alone..

..this closeup bloom is the flower on the upper left with full digital precision zoom with the 1.7X converter but resized to 830 x 1000 for your screen.

Then I've taken a 100% crop in PS of the digital precision zoom original with the 1.7X converter to study it closely..

Overall..very impressive. And these were just .jpgs.

I've looked at the RAW versions and the detail is killer.

Also, the bokah of the R1 with the Tele-converter at these distances is very nice. In the first shot, the background is a compressed view of the opposite end of my pool looking at a waterfall about 35 ft. away.

Not bad.

And even out to about 6-10 feet is very flattering for portrait work if required. That jumps out right away and was one of the qualities I was hoping for with it upon making the decision to purchase.

I love my F-828 at 200mm wide open and this R1 with it's tele-converter at portrait distance meets or exceeds it in overall usability for closeups in the work I like to do..IMO.

And just incase you don't have a calibrated monitor, this is a purple/magenta colored orchid with bright vivid yellow/deep red centers with an aqua blue background from my pool water.

These unedited images straight from the camera are precisely what I saw thru the lens taking it.

I'll be testing the Sony R1 W/A converter over the weekend and will share those with you, too.

At this point, the R1 looks like it's settling in for a good long stay in my bags. I'm even considering a second R-1 body to just keep the tele-converter on it so I have it ready to go to shoot without all the gymnastics to mount it. The prices are so cheap right now at around $700.00 + -.

Comments are welcome and any additional observations out there from you guys that are already using with this tele-converter are most welcome.

Love to see some pics with this setup from others that want to share.

WOW!
Now, that is the best example of the ability of the R1 that I have seen to date.

Nice work. My H5 is trembling with envy! (although it can still take a crisp shot even while trembling because of its OIS) ;-)

Hey AAK.

I wanted to thank you for your H-Series White Paper.

Great stuff.

And I'm sure you've run some tests on these converters for the R1.

What was your high/low on them..?

Other than I've read your comments about the fact they will not zoom..?

Most of those B&W shots you viewed were taken with the R1 and converter in Yellowstone the past few days. The Mountains with snow were are a distance of about 15 miles, while the small tree was about 2000 feet away. The ice shots very close..just a few feet. YOu will have a great time with that converter. A surprise around every corner...and mostly all good.

Purple with red and orange accents on an aqua background with green highlights.

Hard to beat that. Seriously awesome. I love the 1st shot.

Hey Orogard..

Understood.

Thank you for sharing. What a wonderful area to be in with a camera and some photographic passion.

I also looked at your color stuff..all beautiful.

Ever do any wildlife there..?

Must be flooded with photogs when the weather is not so challenging.

I've always wanted to go to Yellowstone and Yosemite Parks. I've been to the Grand Canyon and the Painted Desert in the Southwest, but not where you live.

Do some wildlife depending on the scene. Did see wolves at a far distance on that river area. We see them later. Usualoly about 1/4 mile away. Buffalo, Coyotes and Birds are seen all the time. Large Grizzly up close come later in the Spring. You will note that the Grizzzly on the site is large. Only about 300 feet from us that day last Spring. Not many people up there now, however, the Spring and thru October are a crazy. Still fun to go there anytime...

Hey Janice..

I was sort of pulling a few legs there with the title of the thread.

Slam a Sony camera for PF or CA and you're sure to draw a crowd of onlookings like it was a traffic accident on the freeway.

Thanks for your nice comments.

I wasn't really focusing so much on the flowers as primary here for these shots. I would take more time and light them bettter if that was really what I was after. But I thought the color fidelity was great for sure.

Really, just a test of my new toy, the R1 tele-converter.

Had searched the threads for some good pics showing it's image quality and didn't see much, so I thought I'd post what I saw for all to chew on.
