Does anyone know how to remove Dust Delete Data, without doing a factory reset and losing all the camera's other settings?

I usually do my own sensor cleaning, but recently I had to send my R5 in for a professional sensor clean, on account of particularly sticky dust spots which I could not remove myself. The camera has now been returned, duly cleaned (by Fixation - thoroughly recommended for UK users), but of course the old dust data is irrelevant and I need to recreate it as I go along.

Is there an obvious way to recreate it from a zero base? The manual and Canon websites refer to new data being appended, implying that old readings are cumulatively retained (in EXIF data): if I try to use software to help with sensor spot issues, I do not want it to attempt to do anything to parts of the image where old dust spots no longer exist.

I have not thought about it before (probably because this is a DPP-only resource which I rarely use), but presumably if the data can be recreated from zero, the sensible thing to do would be to reset the Dust Delete Data every time the sensor is cleaned, professionally or otherwise.

Good question and DPP I think is a likely resource to use here.

I, perhaps incorrectly assumed that when the dust data is saved it's fresh each time. Anything else would be a bit odd.

Maybe the dpp manual could help?

Thank you. No, the DPP and R5 manual both refer to data being appended, but not to being reset. I would not actually expect DPP to do this, since the data is created in camera and there is nothing DPP could do to reset this in camera.

My guess, which I cannot check, is that running Dust Delete Data in camera actually does reset the data, and that “append” is perhaps a mistranslation of the original manual in Japanese, otherwise it would if used over a lengthy period become clogged up with long removed dust spots, which could soon begin to degrade image quality if used indiscriminately or give rise to impossibly lengthy processing times if unnecessary corrections all had to be removed manually (which can be done in DPP).

if, however, anyone knows differently, it would be good to hear from you.

From the r52 manual.

This is saying the new dust data is appending to the subsequent images.

This is the same as the R5 manual.

I think what it means is that the Dust Delete Data is created anew every time it is run, and appended to every image thereafter. Re-running Dust Delete Data does not append the new results to itself, it is then the new data which is appended to subsequent images, and so on until it is run again. That would make sense. Thus there is no need ever to delete Dust Delete Data in camera, just re-run it to update it.

Thanks for your input.

You also ask about “losing all the camera's other settings”

Don’t forget with the R5 you can save all your camera settings to a card. Useful if you ever wish to reset your camera, or if you send it in for service, of lend it to a family member who screws up your settings and doesn’t tell you what they did!
