Hi everybody,

after having owned my DP1 for half a year but not shot a lot I decided to take it on vacation to Chile as my only camera. I knew this would mean no fancy wildlife shots for me - but I gladly left those to my companions lugging SLR or superzoom kit around...

All were shot on Auto or Aperture Prio as Raws with SPP3.5.1 automagic JPEG export. Any criticism is welcome - especially postprocessing tips...

Enjoy!

Lago General Carreras near Chile Chico

Puerto Chacabuco

Puerto Aysen

The Pampa near Balmaceda Airport

Hot Rod

Stray Dog at Zapallar Harbour

The Transandine Railway

The Telephoto Gang at Valparaiso - these things shure look heavy... Bonus points for any identified pieces of gear... And no, that's not us...

Gift Shop at Valparaiso - never would have thought that the internal flash can do this...

Very nice series of images that shows the both the stromg and weak sides of DP1.

1. is unsharp. Guessing user error. You also see the DP1 dreaded red grid to the right. A bad start.

2. is VERY sharp. Nice catch.

3. is the best image IMHO. It is sharp and the air is full of humidity. You can see that it has rained not long ago. Its a pity with the lack of details in some clouds. But the dynamic range is very high - not easy stuff. You also see a red hue on one of the houses - an effect of the red grid again. In this case it does not matter that much IMHO. It does not look like a red grid. But - I would probably try to desaturate that red hue.

4. looks like you are taking from a moving car. The ground nearby is not sharp.

5. is also very, very sharp. Not being there I dont know - but I assume hat the pink car is really red. Red cars may turn that kind of pink for DP1. I might be wrong though - and it was pink. If it was red (or you want it red) then the image can be saved. Some here can help you how to do it. Its easiest if you have taken a RAW image.

6. Yet another very sharp image. Personally I would have used smaller aperture though to get the entire image sharp.

7. Also sharp where the focus is - and it is in the right place - on the train. Personally I would have used smaller aperture here also.

8. An ordinary image of your companions. Funny to see what heavy stuff they carry :)

9. A nice image showing how well DP1 renders shades and hues. Are they correct? I dont know. But they look good. And thats often what counts.

... images, letting us see your views, offering a personal set of interesting scenes as you saw them. I enjoyed the 'picture story' as well as some helpful 'learning' about things to do to improve my DP1 results.

Thank-you for these descriptive scenes fromm your trip.

to my eye, composition needs more consideration (not that we all don't suffer from that).

agree with the earlier comment otherwise.

thanks for sharing. bet it was a fun trip.

yeah, taken from moving car - should have insisted on stopping...

again moving car but not so bad this time

the red was indeed a bit faded - not shure wether it was that strong though - will check on sb. elses shots and maybe try get it correct. It was shot raw, so it should be possible.

Actually this was just some people passing by - but I really thought their amount of gear astonishing...
9. A nice image showing how well DP1 renders shades and hues. Are they correct? I dont know. But they look good. And thats often what counts.
The colors are quite ok from my memory...

Thanks for the tips!

Some of the pictures are really nice, but in the future it would be better to post smaller versions with links to the full-size images!

Joachim,

Ditto - some really good examples of your first work with the DP1 and definitely a picturesque trip - appreciate you sharing it/them. But even on my very high speed office connection the photos were slow to load. Best I think to post a medium size version with a separate link (usually dropping the file type suffix) to let folks pixel peep selectively.

Best,

Great! Some are even so sharp and lively that Roland brought up the theme again whether colors like this can be true... I almost cut myself ;)
